Sterilising bottles?

ORIGINAL POST

Hi

Wondering up to what age it is important to sterilise baby's bottles? Going to Phillipines for a week and won't be able to take steriliser. Will it be wrong to just wash bottles in warm soapy water?

Recommended 1 year at least.

However, even after 1 year old, I bring a travel kettle to sterilize (boil) the nipples, and the bottles, I steam them for 1 minute. Let air dry, baby always fine on all the trips.

depends on how old your child is.

after 1, we stopped sterilising bottles (bottles were cut out anyway).

before that, we used lindam microwave bags - perfect!

after 1, when we travel, i bring my own liquid detergent and sponge and wash it in the hot water in the hotel bathroom.

Thanks for all the help! My daughter is 7 months. I think I'll go for the milton tablets - sounds easiest! I'm sure the hotel should have a kettle in the room. We are limited with luggage as between the 3 of us we can only take 20kgs on the plane - it's one of those small ones!

Like some of the previous posters, we used the Lindam microveable sterilizer bags (from B2B). Worked wonders for our travels, all you need is water and a microwave. Most hotels will have a microwave for sure, no need to fiddle around with tablets, rinsing, etc.

I have never had a microwave in any of the hotels I stayed at! I would never use the kettle provided by the hotels. It's very dirty and stained inside.

Boiling nipples definitely ok IF the nipples are the silicon ones.

There are many styles of travel kettle that are very compact. When I travel, I just put things inside the kettle, it really is worth bringing.

I also buy pouch baby foods that you can boil a few minutes in hot water for baby, very good way of preparing meals for baby instead of jar food all the time, or cereals.

I asked the hotels in advance - and they either put a microwave in our room, or would take the bag from me, and bring it back steaming hot, or would let me go to the kitchen (the really small places) and do it myself.

Having used both the microwave bags and the milton sterlising fluid/tablets, I think the latter are easier on holiday. I used to take a container which held the correct amount of water and then just leave the things that needed to be sterilised in it (changing the solution every 24 hours). That meant I could always be confident that the bottles etc were sterile when I used them (and also no need to wait for them to cool after microwaving). No need to rinse the milton solution off. Although it smells funny, neither of my children ever rejected a bottle sterlised that way, so I guess it smells worse than it tastes.

I am sure that mothercare sell sterising bags. You just fill them with regular water and the tablet or powder inside disolves and you hang it (it has a draw string top) and put all your bottles etc inside. (same principal as milton but completely disposable unit).

I have never used them, but have often seen them and thought that they would be a super thing to have if you needed to sterilize bottles while traveling.

Yes Mothercare sells sterilizing bags with tablets so you don't even need a microwave, very convenient. =)

How many bottles do the sterilizing bag fit? Also how about cleaning bottles - do you use the cleaning bottles liquid or just washing up liquid. Noticed that they don't sell washing up liquid especially for bottles.

Pigeon's Baby bottle cleanser is the best. I have used it for 3 years for my two babies. Now that they are into solid foods, I use Combi's baby bottle dish washing liquid to take away the oiliness out of their bowls and spoons.

I bring one small bottle to trips, and buy their pump size for home use. You can find them in Jusco, or Toys R Us. They have them in Eugene Club too.

A few years ago I bought an electric travel steriliser from Bumps 2 Babes, it was really compact and worked well. Not sure if they still sell them.
