Hi Nicher,

I started my boy on a sippy cup at 6 months. He's 9 months now. We have the Tommee Tippee one (his favourite), the Avent one and the Mothercare one.

At first he did not understand what the cup was all about at all -- we were in stitches watching him all wide-eyed with water dribbling out of his mouth. He still only drinks a small amount at a time, but he is starting to show off a bit now and reaches for the cup and tries to feed himself. BIG mess!

I've heard that in an ideal situation, we should encourage our little ones to start drinking directly from a cup. Has anyone managed to do this with their babies? At what age is this realistic? I'd also like to know whether a sippy or a straw cup works better -- I thought about trying a straw cup but worry that the flow may be too fast. What are your thoughts?

Hi Nicher,

I have a mickey mouse sippy cup with 3 holes, i didn't know that there are stages into it. I gave it to him but he coughed as the flow might be too fast. I just give him water from the bottle, but like mayafox said, we have to encourage giving it from a cup. Let me know if you find something good.

I showed the cup and offered the cup at 7 months. At 6 months I still thought my daughter was getting enough of her liquid intake from my milk - and at 7 months she would take small sips.

I LOVE the playtex rubber spouted one - which sort of has a nipply feel but you have to suck more cup style. Both of my girls took very well to this cup and moved on easily to straw cups.

Thanks for all your advice! Bubs doesn't drink much at this stage. Maybe a few sips with his meals and about 20 mls in the afternoon. Will keep trying with the 'adult' cup and maybe try a straw one too.

Thank you all. So I'd assume it's sippy cup first and then proceed to a straw cup. Mayafox did you get your Tommee Tippee from Mothercare? There should be only one type avaiable right?

Meanwhile I'll check out Playtex elsewhere :)

we used the avent training sippy ones and then went on to munchkin straw cup.

at 6 months, it's still a practice stage - don't expect them to fulfil their liquid intake via the cups. what i do is i have 2 cups during meals - one for me to hold and feed him with and the other one for him to practice.

I have tried giving our baby (8 months) a straw cup to use (he had previously used the sippy cup) and he doesn't seem to know how to use it. I have tries to demonstrate the idea of sucking but he doesn't seem to get it and just bites on the straw. Any ideas?

hi sky,

i introduced the straw cup because my kid would not hold up the avent training cup to drink....he would sit on the floor and try to suck on the avent bottle.....so i thought, maybe a straw would help? and it did!

just keep practicing, he will get it eventually...

My 9 month old is drinking water from the Playtex no-spill sippy cup. She has no problem drinking from it. How should I wean her from the bottle to cup for her formula? Should I let her use the sippy cup/straw cup or regular cup?

my mm is 7mths and i've just been offering him milk in the medela bottle cap!! it's small enough for him to hold with both hands and since the opening is smaller than a real cup less gets poured all over his face, more in his mouth. I tried the nuby thing but mm has no idea what to do with it and a real cup is just so messy. haha but he's showing so much interest in drinking on his own, will grab at whatever i'm holding and try to 'drink' the contents. he started doing this with the puréed zuchinni b/c I wasn’t feeding it fast enough so now he drinks it from the medela bottle cap…don’t know if I should just encourage him to drink from normal cups or to keep introducing a sippy one…

We used Advent bottles and introduced the sippy "teats" with our 7 month old's bottles of formula. We found that LO was willing to try sucking on the sippy teats because he knew could see his formula in the bottle. When LO turned 1, we decided to teach him how to use a straw since we've switched to whole milk; it's easier when we're out to do the milk box drink thing. Teaching him to use a straw was a bit difficult as he wanted to chew the straw. But LO figured it out immediately after I touched his lips/tongue with some juice (which he loves) and then stuck a straw into the same container. He sucked up that juice immediately! Guess he thought the effort was worth it! LOL
