I was in travel agents today, asked if one year was available again, she said no, only 6 month for non-American, local non-permanent residents.

There is no one rule though. Depends on your nationality, so you need to be explicit when you ask. For most nationalities, even if local resident, though not permanent resident, there is no difference to other people from same country.

Permanent residents have different rules.

I got a 6 month a week ago. Aussie guy with no HKID or any other permanency.

Maybe depends what country your from you could apply for an APEC card.

Go anywhere in Asia pre-approved. Mine arrived this week (i'm happy:)

If you are a resident of a member country of APEC and you travel on business frequently in the region you can apply for an APEC card and if approved you can visit member countries without a visa and generally stay for up to 3 months - you also get to go through the special APEC/Diplomatic channel at immigration. This card is better than gold...

I hold an Australian passport and was given a 12 month multiple entry visa just a few weeks back.

Believe the problem is with the Travel Agent not the China Consulate. The travel Agent I use is in the Bank Of America Buiding and even there if you strike the wrong person you will only get a 6 month visa.

Insist on the 12 months and you will probably get it.

I already had a 3 yr visa in my passport before getting the APEC card so i am not 100% sure

My local agents were similarly uninformed.

The staff at CTS House were better informed.

Slightly off topic:

Is APEC card only for business travellers? My friend visits HK often (primarily for shopping) and would like to apply for an APEC card. You think that would be possible?

Hi Geraldo,

My husband goes to China often and with no visa only with his APEC card.

Not possible to get an APEC card as a tourist... There are some conditions that need to be met to qualify (position within a company etc...)

You can definately travel on an APEC card to enter china without a visa. My husband just did it on the weekend!

Getting the card and using it seem to be two different issues. Also, some nationalities can go to China without visas regardless of APEC card (e.g., Singapore). Perhaps Autumn and Ausmum could share the nationalities of their husbands? Judging by her name, if Ausmum's husband is Australian, then the APEC card--however obtained--would be a great benefit. How long is an APEC card good for?

Sorry - should have said that. Yes we are Australian and I had to get visas for myself and my kids to travel to China. My husband just used the APEC card. I don't beleive that I am entitled to one as I am not working, although I did get the benefit in the queues at the airport as I went into the APEC line in immigration with my husband and kids without question!

Usually if you apply thru China travel, you need a verification letter from a company, but when going to a travel agency, when they do it for you, they normally have ways to with already having a standard letter when helping you to apply.

Although this thread is now (almost) history, I want to add that they will not grant an APEC card unless your passport is valid for more than three years from date of application.

Edited four hours later: I should know better than to accept the first answer. After being rejected at Immigration in the morning, I e-mailed them to ask why their written materials didn't specify that requirement. Almost immediately a terrific officer in that section e-mailed back to say, in effect, sorry, please come back and we will process your application. So I did, and they are. Therefore: validity of the passport can be shorter than three years, but when you get a new passport you also have to replace the card for additional fee.

Finally, if I do actually get the card, and if it works without visas, I will post the results. They said wait three-four weeks for the letter.

When I was in CTS a few weeks ago, they said they don't need letter, but the name of the company you will visit in China. I asked if they will need verification or an address, no was the answer, I could literally put any company on the mainland and it would be acceptable.
