My baby is just about to turn 4 mths old and over the last 2 weeks, she is constantly putting things in her mouth- fingers, fists, toys, etc. The mouth is never empty! She's also drooling a lot, often soaking the front of her clothes by the end of a day out. I tried feeling her gums with my finger, but don't feel any hard areas that might be teeth. Has anyone else had this situation with their babies at 4 mths old?

Oh yes! My 4.5 month old is the same way. He would put his whole fist in his mouth if he wanted to! He's starting to stick his feet in his mouth too. :)
I asked our ped. about it in regards to teething, but it's not, it's a stage where they are exploring via the mouth and the saliva is produced in excess, forget the term he used. Although some babies might teethe this early.
My mum actually gave me some good advice, try to get bibs that have a plastic/rubber backing, so when it does get soaked, it doesn't go through to the clothes. All of our bibs are cotton/terrycloth, so I need to get some new ones. He is literally soaked at the end of the day. Don't you just love being covered in drool too? I have wet patches all the time on me. I wear it with honor, ha ha!

Thanks for your advice. I've just noticed that my baby is now gagging herself accidently by sticking her fingers down her throat. Hopefully she'll learn quickly that this isn't a good thing to do! By the way, I've been on the hunt for bibs that are: adjustable around the neck, plastic backing, easy to get on a squirming baby and not too expensive. I finally found good ones at my local Wellcome of all places. Each bib is HK$11, has plastic backing and a long strip of velcro on one side so you can adjust the neck opening. Also easy to get on b/c the fastener is on the side not at the back of the neck. Couldn't find anything like this at Mothercare or Bumps to Babes!

Agree with DaniR, my baby started to drool at 4 months and now she's 6.5M and she has 2 teeth coming out! I just keep changing her bib throughout the day, it's normal for her to go through 6 bibs a day.

Your baby is on the young side for teething, and at 4 months, it's natural for a baby to put objects into her mouth to explore them. Also at this age she's beginning to produce more saliva than she can swallow, which causes drooling.
