Why is it that in some countries such as Aust, we can drink straight from the tap and in HK we most boil the water first.

Because we often have shoddy pipes in bldgs here. The water is clean but they use cheap as possible pipes and filters.

I won't even drink boiled water here. I even boil my pasta with bottled water.

i thought the water we get in restaurants were filtered. I guess I am being naive, they probably wouldn't spend money on water filters. so if i were in a 5 star hotel and decide not to drink bottled water, am i just getting straight stuff from the tap?

The water in HK can be pretty murky but, as others have mentioned, this is from old pipes. HK water is potable and meets international standards. We live in a fairly new building but use a filter for cooking water as it is heavily chlorinated and the smell can be quite strong - it also stops the fuzz in the kettle. Otherwise it's bottled mineral water for drinking.

In over twenty years of drinking HK water we have not become sick but we both fell ill in Sydney back in '98 from drinking the tap water. So it's wise to be cautious wherever...

Born and bred in HK and drunk the tap water all my life...I'm never sick. Government expats in days of old were advised to drink the tap water as it would give them a stronger constitution and basically toughen them up....I have to say the drinking of bottled water was unheard of in the 70s and maybe even he 80s. Distilled water is not meant to be good for you and you shoudn't give mineral water to kids. Spring water is hard to come by. However, saying all that, my kids hate the taste of the tap water.

we used to drink bottled water only but because of the cumulative cost and hassle of buying weekly, recently we bought a filter and have been drinking from the tap for 2 weeks now. Our building is newish, and so far so good

The building we liv ein is 11 years old. The maintenance people clean the drinking water tanks servicing the building every three or four months and we drink directly from the tap. Been here over 4 years and have had no problems with it.

The building uses sea water for flushing the toilets and I believe other newish buildins on HK island do as well. An expample Australian cities should follow.

I have to run at least a sink full of water every morning before our water runs clear, so no I don't drink tap water, I use bottled. But I do use the tap water for cooking, cleaning veg etc. And I hate the water you get in restaurants and clubs, it tastes like drinking a swimming pool.

jrr tolkien, we drink filtered boiled water at home but what about dishes and cups. i have a 15mth old babay, i am still rinsing all his bowls and utensils with hot boiled filtered water. it is such a waste of water and energy. however is that necessary or can i just wipe dry the bowls and utensils before using them. do the parasites get killed when it is dried or will they not cause that much harm if we are not exactly drinking the water.

Why not just wash them in Milton's fluid?
