I need to upgrade the air conditioning in my apt. Wondering if anyone has any advice on contractors, brands to buy etc

Hitachi, Daikin, and General are the most popular brands in HK. I find Hitachi most durable. Daikin ones, unless you buy the more expensive models, they are just average.
Prices are mainly the same as they are "fixed" price unless a specific dealer has a promotion.
Lots of choices for contractors in Wan Chai, and North Point and Mongkok.
I also have bought air cons straight from Fortress, just the same. Better warranty service from Fortress actually.
