Re-entry rules into HK from Mainland

I can't seem to find a definintive answer to this online anywhere...

I am travelling to Hong Kong in May then to the Mainland then flying back out of HK.

I am a U.S. citizen so I know I can stay in HK for 90 days without a visa. My question is, if I leave to the Mainland within 90 days, does the time limit reset when I return to HK?

In other words, if I go to mainland China on the 80th day of my stay in HK and stay in China for 2 weeks (past the 90 day limit), can I go back into HK without a visa?

Thank you in advance!

Agreed. And FYI the definitive answer would be obtainable from the Immigration department at

Yes the time limit resets - I had been back and forward to Macau when I was just a tourist, and each re-entry gave me another 90 days stay in Hong Kong. So you will be fine.

...but do it too many times using a regular pattern and the Immigration people might notice and ask some awkward questions. Doesn't sound like the situation with you, but others have managed to stay for a very long time on their tourist visa.
