Moving to Shanghai - inf rqd

ORIGINAL POST

Hi

We are likely to be moving to Shanghai with our 3 yr old son and I am 11 weeks pregnant and will probably have the baby in Shanghai. We have a few questions and would really appreciate it if we could have any advice or information on the following:

1. Recommendation on hospitals (expat or local) where I can go for my pre and post natal check ups and deliver the baby. For the private hospitals how much does it cost for the checks ups and the delivery.

2. For my son, I would like him to go to an International British School - any recommendations on these.

I have read some of the posts but ideally would like to speak to Mums who are living out there.

Thanks

Kaman

For hospitals i would suggest going to International Peace Maturnity Hospital. You can get check ups, deliver baby and post natal care. I am not sure the cost, i have insurance but i can find out for you on my next visit.

Not sure about a just british schools. I know Concordia is a fine school for international children however its not just british. I searched around and couldnt find any.

If ur moving here make sure to bring tons of maturnity clothing with you. The ones here are hideous.

Hi Shantell,

Thanks for your reply. I would appreciate it if you could find out the costs for me.

Is there anything else we should bring that isn't easily available.

I can't speak with authority, but it may be useful for you to know that Cesarean rates are extremely high in China, if that's a concern to you. I think birthing practices are different, generally, and medical professionals expect to direct you what to do and for you to do as you are told. I may be wrong . . . but just make sure you find medical professionals you trust to recognize and adhere to your values in terms of how you are treated.

Our son attends Dulwich College which is a British school and we're happy with it. There are 2 other British schools here, Shanghai Rego International School and British International School. The cost of these 3 schools are roughly the same, approximately U$20,000 per year.

Schools have long waiting lists here so you should contact the schools asap.

I found out the cost to deliver the baby. Depending on which room you want. Suite costs about 32,000RMB Room A is 29,000Rmb, rm B is 25,000rmb and rm c is 17,000rmb. When i asked they said each visit is different for each person lol.... But i know that ultrasounds cost about 200rmb per time.

I like this hospital because the doctors all speak english. The rooms are nice and spacious. Our insurance said its the best place for pregnancy and delivery. However, i think where ever you are comfortable is best.

Meiguoren- I told my doctor i did not want a C section unless it was medically possible. She understood my needs as a foriegn woman. Some places are more willing to work with foreigners.

I would suggest bringing medications you might need for your son. Like tylenol or cold meds. I have been having a hard time finding rubbing alcohol and witches hazel. I havent found neosporin or other small things i always used back home. If i had known what items werent here i would have brought alot more. I cant find tampoons either if you use those. Haha..

I would say make a list of things you cant live without and bring or ship those over.

Ruth did that really work? You showed her the picture and she made the item? Sheesh i wish i had known that early. I had to have family ship over from home.

Best of luck dear!

Hi

Thanks for the adv and inf - living in UK you get spoilt with the facilities and things that are readily available.

We are hoping to visit Shanghai in 2-3 weeks time to look at places to stay, hospitals, schools etc.

Shantell - thanks for getting the costs, we will definately visit the Int Peace Maternity Hosp. In additon to medications for my son, I will be bringing my indian spices - at the moment all I crave is spicy food!!

Turtle1 - why did you choose to put your son in Dulwich College and not one of the others?

My son did attend one of the other British schools and we were very unhappy with the school. Dulwich was opening their junior school then and we went to take a look at the campus and were very happy with the campus and resources available. I met with some of the staff when I visited the school and felt very comfortable with them. It turned out to the be right decision as my son has been there for 3 years and is very happy there!

New handle...I'm the poster formerly known as Ruth at Clifford.

I have found tampons all over China, in big shops like Carrefour and Park N Shop, even Wal Mart. But I have never found a reliable place to get antiperspirant, unscented.

You can ask Indian restaurants in Shanghai and buy some spices from them. Some Indian restaurants in Chinese cities even have small shops as part of the restaurant.

Oh, I had some lovely things made just by showing photos! I also brought things in that I already had and they copied them beautifully.

I should bring in ones i like. I had one thing tailored for me however i kept losing weight so it ended up not fitting like 4 times. That was a good thing but sure was a pain. I'll have to try that. Just bring something in and ask. However, the locals here in Shanghai tend to be a bit stuffy about somethings. I brought a pair of pants in and asked if they could take the legs in a bit and the lady rudely told me she wouldnt. Maybe i need to find the right one.

Kaman- for when you visit Shanghai:

Best of luck!
