We have A/C in each room of our flat. A few of them have had a bit of a smell coming from them (my husband says like cat urine, but it is a freeon or weird smell. Hard to describe. We had it last year and had them serviced and completely cleaned before the winter to prepare for this summer. ut they are smelly already.

Has anyone else had this with air conditioners? (Ours is a Toshiba)

It is most likely mold buildup. It is an awful smell.

If you aren't having them serviced again, you can easily pull out the screen type filter and wash it in 10% bleach water. Use a squirt bottle with the bleach solution to spray inside the unit to kill some of the other mold growth.
