I am in Shanghai and I seldom see a taxi with seat belts so I assume BJ will be the same...

Really?! So, I shouldn't bring one? I assume there isn't car seat law in China...My husband is there now and says that they are terrible drivers, but he has yet to see an accident. My concern is safety for our daughter. I would love to have her in her car seat...

If you bring a car seat with you to Beijing, some taxi drivers will not even pick you up ... knowing they have to leave a few minutes for you to buckle that thing, and unbuckle that thing....

Given that there is no law making car seats mandatory in HK, I'd be stunned if they have one in Mainland China!

We came across very few taxis with seat belts, so we hired a driver each day (but we were only there for a few days) and just left the car seats in the car while we went to various sights etc. Have to agree with your husband - some of the worst drivers that I've ever seen were in Beijing. Reversing up a motorway exit, when they've realised that they've missed was not unusual. Once we saw a truck driver driving the wrong way down the motorway towards us. Our driver slammed on the brakes a few times when other drivers swerved in front of him. On one occassion, I was thrown towards the front windscreen (from the back of the car), luckily my seatbelt finally locked.

We are suppose to be given a driver through the company that my husband works for, but from my husband's personal experience he said hauling a cab is much quicker and easier. Thank you so much, everyone for giving me your thoughts on the car seat situation. I think I am leaning towards not bringing ours...not sure if I'd want to carry it everywhere I go.

If you will have car on a permanent basis I'd say bring the car seat and leave it in your car. The roads and the driving are bad all over China. It will be very useful for taking day trips out of BJ.

Taxis are a different matter - you'll have to work out what you feel comfortable with. Personally I've resigned myself to the fact that cars rarely travel at speed here and strangely I feel safer in taxi's in Guangzhou than in taxis in Hong Kong (where they drive MUCH faster, and never give you time to buckle in or safely lodge luggage, bags, buggy etc).

For younger babies the bucket type seats seem really useful even if you can't strap them in. However, for an older child you just have to set rules (mine knows no standing while the car is moving etc).

The state of the roads, the quality of the driving and the safety awareness are definitely one of the biggest worries for a parent in China.

Hi sparr921,

My wife also has a two year old daughter, is also moving to Beijing in June, her husband (me) is also already in Beijing braving the traffic when he hasn't got the company car and driver.

Either you are my wife (in which case I'm behaving myself and give my best to your mother....), or you're in exactly the same position as my wife and have the same concerns, in which case you should probably meet up when you arrive.

If your daughters name is Charlotte Poppy, give her a big kiss from Daddy, otherwise your not my wife, but I'd be happy to arrange a meeting (with her).

Hi Holsim1,

That's pretty funny! No, I am not your wife. It would be great for all of us to meet.

My daughter's name is Madison.

We will be there the 2nd wk of June. Perhaps, once everyone is settled in we can arrange to meet.

Will you and your wife bring a car seat?

Hi Holsim, Hi Spar,

I will also be moving to Beijing in a few weeks. And I have been wondering about car seats too. I have a 7 month old daughter. What did you end up deciding?
