Dear Rick,
Where were you born? Where was your father born? So long as one of you was born in the UK, the child is entitled to British citizenship. It is only the children of second generation born overseas, who do not qualify. Furthermore, Great Britain is about the only country in the EU that allows dual nationality. So it may well be that your child has the best of both worlds and can be a UK citizen as well as well as whatever nationality your wife is depending on the rules of nationality of her citizenship. I know this because my husband used to work in UK immigration. If you still have doubts, contact either the Home Office in the UK or the Consular section of the British Consulate General here in HKG.

hi,
if you were born in the UK then your (legitimate)child, no matter where it is born is entitled to a British passport.
However, the problem then arises for your child's children. They will be British by descent and if they marry a non-British person in the future and have children outside the UK then the children (your grandchildren) will not be entitled to British passports automatically.
I came across this problem because i was born and bred here in HK. My father was in the RHKP and so was technically employed by the British Gov to work in HK. When I had my son I was unmarried (have since married the father) and the father was a UK born ctitizen. The British Consulate told me that because I wasn't married to the father of the baby the baby wasn't entitled to a British passport (only legitimate children are) and so I had three options:
1) Marry the father before the baby was born
2) Go to UK to have the baby
3) Get my father to prove that if he wasn't employed by the British Gov to work in HK then I would have been born in UK and thus be a UK born citizen (my Mum was from China). The fact that he met my mum in HK is besides the fact.
I ended up doing option 3 and so my son now has a British Passport. The next one will be easy as I am now married.
My best advice to you is to go the British Consulate and ask them - they are very helpful. However, I do think your child should be fine with a British Passport.
