I'm with HSBC and haven't paid a single "monthly fee" in the past 5 years.

I'm happy now I've moved away from a bank nearly doubling rates for certain accounts! And don't give me that rubbish about total relationship balances including MPF! MPF with that bank is a waste, as is their managed funds when you look at what they are offering. Go elsewhere, some better benefits for some of us elsewhere.

One + with HSBC is they have ATMS/branches in virtually every country in Asia - and no need to pay overseas fees when you want to take cash out on trips ...

I have a powervantage - perhaps that exempts me? All i know is that i am never asked to authorize a withdrawal fee as I am if I use a local or other foreign bank's ATM

You could always go to the bank and have them mark your account "no promotional material to be sent". That would save some trees.
HSBC has a basic current account too, below Powervantage. I think this has no monthly fees.

I have a powervantage account and pay $25 every time I take money out of a cashpoint outside of HK. Ed, have a look at your statements and you'll probably find it listed there where it's not so obvious.
My gripe with HSBC is that they sell themselves as a global bank, but you try and do anything that involves an overseas branch and you soon find out they have no links whatsoever.

I think almost all banks have "separate" regions, even if they are "global." We were at STandard Chartered in HK - and then when we went to SEoul, had to start all over. WE had an account at Bank of America before in the US, and when we went to HK, start over. Citibank was the same -we had accounts there in HK, and in Seoul, had to start over.
We had very good luck with Citibank - their credit cards and whatnot were quite good. But they were very difficult on international wire transfers. (lots of surcharges.)
Depending on your needs, you need to figure out which bank has the best for your uses. For us, wire transfers was a big issue for us, so we went with Standard Chartered in the end, because the transfer fees were far less than other banks.

im my experience HSBC have terrible customer service but great internet banking and relatively low banking service charges in global terms. Banks in Europe charge far higher fees for international remittances.
For decent interest on personal accounts I suggest you try Bank of East Asia - they have competitve time deposit rates.
