September Baby what to wear/buy!

Hi I'm due to have my first baby in September. I'm trying to get my shopping done before I get too big and the heat kicks in!

Just wondering on the type of clothes and things I will need for baby for this time of year.

So far I have bought a few short sleeve bodies from Stanley but do you think I will need long sleeve all in one baby gros or do you think it will be too hot? Do u think I will need any cardigans?

For sleeping, what would you suggest for the baby to wear? I plan to try and wrap the baby in a light weight cotton wrap. Do u think the a short sleeve body, cotton wrap and blanket will be ok?

Also with regards to bedding, how many sets of sheets would u suggest to buy?

I plan to breastfeed, but will also express, how many bottles would you suggest I buy, do you think 4 would be enough?

Also just in case I have a problem breastfeeding, would you suggest I buy a tin a formula?

Sorry for so many questions! Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Hi buz,

I just had my first baby boy three months ago, hopefully I can share some of my experience.

The weather in September is likely to still be warm but you are heading into winter in two months. You may want to consider that when shopping.

I personally find the 100% cotton long sleeves sleepers to be very useful. As your baby will mostly be indoors, and you are likely to have the air conditioning turned on at that time, long sleeves are good as you need not bother about putting another layer on your baby. I realised that it's best to minimise the handling on a newborn. The sleepers are also very convenient for diapering. You can change the diaper and still keep him 80% clothed.

Mothercare sells 3 in a pack.

I do bought many short sleeves but my baby has not worn any. The biggest disadvantage of most of the short sleeves design is that it requires you to wear over the baby's head. A newborn's neck muscles are not well developed, so it is advisable to reduce fussing around the neck and head area.

My baby sleeps in the long sleeve baby gros.

A good wrap is advisable for you to swaddle the baby. Through this forum, I got the brillant advice of buying the miracle blanket. It's fantastic for swaddling and keeping my baby warm.

Better to go to a La Leche League meeting before the baby is born. They have a whole library of books you can borrow to help you with pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and becoming a mum/dad/family. www.askdrsears.com is a very good website for info.

Many malls in HK are horrifically AC'd so longer sleeves are better. Check the back of your baby's neck to see how warm/cool they are.

Good luck and enjoy your pre-baby life and have a wonderful BabyMooon!

My baby was born in Oct. Back then it was still very very hot and wet. Baby sweated a lot. 6-12 pieces of 100% cotton monk shirts are useful (long sleeves). There are some shorter ones (like a shirt) and longer ones (like a rope). Buy both and if the weather is cool, wear the short one inside and the long one outside. They hardly need to wear pants. At home you prob will wrap him with a blanket or towel with a hood as it's easier to carry. Get a few pairs of mittens and booties too to protect his little hands and feet.

I seldom took baby out in the first two months so you don't need much going out clothes as others said.

As for bedding, I put baby in Moses Basket in the first two months so didn't need bedsheets etc. I guess 3 to 4 sets would be enough though.

Good luck in breastfeeding. It's not that hard. I used to worry a lot too but once you get the hang of it, it's just so convenient and easy. LLL and Moms on this site will give you so much advice so by all means, try hard!

Hi Buz, I had my baby early last Oct, around the same time as Nicher, and I agree with her the baby kimono top (monk shirt) is the best choice for early days. You can get the short sleeves one from Mothercare with Velco, and you can buy the long sleeves ones with little strings to tie in the front from the local markets (Aberdeen/WanChai/Central, usually $6 each!). For the first 2 months I prefer to use the onsies with front opening, they are easy to wear and you don't need to worry about pulling over the onesie over your baby's floppy head.

Lots of receiving blankets for swaddling and mittens to keep baby from scratching his/her face.

3 or 4 sets of bedsheets are enough, best to choose 100% cotton in white.

You can wait a bit and see how your breastfeeding goes before purchasing formula and bottles. Avent bottles are generally good but if your baby is gassy then perhaps u should get the Dr. Brown's bottles.

Good luck with evrerything!!

I am having my baby in june and i bought long sleeve outfits for him too since most of the time we will be inside with aircan on.

As to breastfeeding and formula...

i would suggest not buying any formula at all as it gives you a reason to quit if things get rough. Breast feeding isnt easy but it sure makes up for the rough times. The bond with ur child is so strong i cant even begin to explain the feeling. Some say dont buy a pump but i think just in case you should. I get so much milk after milk comes in i could probably feed 3 babys no problem, others dont have enough milk and cant pump so we are all different.Make sure to buy some freezer storage bags for storing the breast milk and buy some breast/nursing pads. i prefered the reusable cloth ones usually in flannel or cotton. When my friend threw my baby shower i made sure everyone knew that 0-3 is summer clothes and 3-6 is fall clothes and 6-9 is winter and 9-12 is winter for me. You are having baby in sept so make sure all the ppl around you know what time of year and how old baby will be so you will have appropriate clothing.

I always had 5-6 different bedsheets sets since babies always get messy and stuff.

Good luck!!

For nighttime I loved those "nightdresses" with the elasticated heam. I found them in the US but I am sure they will be here too. So much easier for the middle of the night changes than a babygro, as you just have to lift rather than undoing and then redoing up snaps (we always ended up with the snaps in the wrong order). And the ones we had did us thru to my babe was about 9 months old.
