I have been invited to my Mandarin language teacher's home for lunch on Sunday and wanted to know what would be a proper gift to bring? Is alcohol OK i.e. a bottle of wine? I'm sure there is something better and more culturally appropriate. Any suggestions!
Tks.

if ur teacher is traditional, bring over a basket of fruit and you can't really go wrong.
if you've ever walked past fruit stalls on the streets you can see these baskets decorated with some ribbons hanging from their stalls. ask for the price of the basket first, if reasonable to you (sometimes $40-50$), pick the fruits you want then ask them to wrap it.
Just don't buy any baskets that is already pre-wrapped with the fruits in them. Usually the fruits on the bottom where you can't see are very ripe or not very good.
Since fruits doesn't last very long, don't buy toooo much.

what vanilla said above is a very good advice, and surely good enough for your chinese teacher. fruit, everyone eats it, while wine, it depends, it is accordingly their own likings. even chinese visit chinese , fruit is always there too, a very local gesture indeed. you can't go wrong.
