Hi,
Has anyone been to Tibet without joining a tour group? I find it quite difficult to find a travel agency in HK that can arrange only the flight and the tibet travel permits. There is the possibility to obtain it in Chengdu or Kunming, but it would be better if I won't loose 2 days there. It would be great if you can give me some advice. Thanx
Cheers

i am under the impression that you don't need the permit when travelling by train.
but otherwise, i believe you can get to nepal and arrange it from there. at least that's what my research says.
i'm hoping to depart in 4 days. i'll try to find out more?

When I checked recently, I was informed that the Tibet guideline is "No individual travel", need to join a group arranged by a tour agency.
The tour agent will arrange for the travel permit.

where did you check?
my research says that group tour is necessary when entering from the nepal border, but not from the mainland.
but then we are both speaking from secondhand information...

Had also checked with CTS. Let me know if otherwise, as I am planning a trip for Oct timeframe.
Thanks.

Hi. I've been researching as well and I found a travel agent in Urumqi who will arrange everything for about 100$US over the cost of the train ticket.

Hi. I have travelled alone in april. There is a tibet travel agent in Hong Kong. They took care of everything for me. (permit, train ticket, etc for individual traveller.) Actually, nobody was asking to see the permit in Tibet. The below is what I did since I also didn't want to stay in Chengdu.
HK-Chengdu by plane
Chengdu-Lhasa by train (can be done in one day if you take a flight from chengdu to Lhasa)
Lhasa-Chengdu-HK by plane (sameday arrival)
*For air ticket, air china website has a good deal.

THINGS HAVE CHANGED RECENTLY following a demonstration by 5 American idiots at the base of Mount Everest and BeiJing has clamped down on travel to Tibet AND WITHIN Tibet.
The Tibet office in ChengDu where the train leaves from IS NO LONGER ABLE TO ISSUE PERMITS.
Just another example of how a few brainless idiots can cause a heap of trouble for others no matter if the cause is worthy or not.
