traditionally it's gold. Either a ring or a bracelet.

but these days it's anything you want - clothes, toys a cute outfit. Money in an envelope with your name written discretely down the side (so they know from whom it came) is also fine. I'd say around $500 HKD would be good. (It ranges depending on your "wealth" - in Korea generally speaking, people give between $10-$100 USD.)

I agree, I could have got a main present for my own kids for $500. For my kids school friends I have a $80-$100 limit, (its surprising what bargains you can get for that if you buy in sales etc), and for close friends children around $150.

the first birthday, the "dohl" traditionally is really a big deal these days. there is always a range - I'm here in Seoul and although I didn't expect it, we got more than $500 HKD for our children - just from friends. If you're close - and you want to do money - a fresh $100 HKD note is fine. Otherwise anything goes. If you're not Korean, I don't think you necessarily have to worry too much about the tradition anyways.
