Shipping car back to Australia - why not?

We are going back to Oz later in the year, and my husband had the idea of shipping our car back. I thought he was crazy, but having looked at some of the old threads on here I'm not sure now.

Our car is a 10yo Corolla, nothing special but it runs well (been passed on through a series of expats). To buy a comparable vehicle in Oz is A$10-11k, judging from the on-line classifieds I looked at (so say HK$60k). I wouldn't expect more than HK$15-20k to sell our car here. That means it would have to cost more than HK$40-45k to ship the car back before we would make a net loss.

So, what IS the current cost of shipping a car back to Oz (all inclusive - I just want to fill out the forms, hand over the car to someone at this end and pick it up at the other end)?

Mobile, I've replied to your pm. I'm surprised that the parts wouldn't be compatible. Are the Corollas here (made in Japan I assume) really so different from the ones in Oz?

It seems that HKKM wanted more than just roll on and roll off service from her sentance "I just want to fill out the forms, hand over the car to someone at this end and pick it up at the other end". If that's the case, it's going to cost more to hire people at both ends to handle the administration etc.

We are moving back to Oz-Brisbane in June. We can not find anyone to ship and handle the registration paper work in Brisbane. Does any one have a referral please?

Does anyone

I'm not sure what exactly is meant by 'roll on roll off'. I assumed that this meant that it is driven onto the ship and off at the other end (as opposed to being packed in a container) and thus the cost is different.

Whatever way it gets there, I just don't want to have to deal with the various government departments, shippers, etc myself. Just hand over the paperwork, the car and the cash to someone at this end, some more papers and cash to someone else at the other end and get the car back.

Mobile - looking at the Oz customs website it showed a couple of things on car importing.

1. Customs tax / duty is c.10% for a newer car (i.e. post 1998)

2. GST is another 10% on top and is calculated on goods value + customs duty + cost of freight and insurance

plus, the value of the car seems to be assessed as the price you paid for it, but what about if you have held it for 12 months or more - how is devaluation taken into account?

Seems pretty heavy to me (>20% of the value + cost of freight and insurance) - is this right?

I also looked at the Oz customs web site. It seems to me like the value used to calculate customs is not necessarily the amount paid for the car. This only seems to be applicable if the car was purchased specifically to be imported, which is not the case here. Otherwise they get some 'qualified person' to judge its value.

(I wish we could use the 'transaction value' - we only paid HK$15k for it!)

Mobile - so in my case, I have a receipt saying I paid HKD240k 15 months ago for the car, but it was not specifically purchased for shipping to Oz. How would the value be judged? Transaction or qualified person, and in your experience do they take devaluation post-purchase into account? Also, at what point is it valued - when landed? If you don't know up front how much it's likely to be assessed at, it may come as a nasty shock! As you appear to have done this frequently, sharing of your experiences are welcomed.

We bought our car privately also, from an acquaintance, and don't have a receipt either. The Aus customs web site says that if the car wasn't bought specifically for shipping, they will get someone to value it (at the importers expense). Mobile, how does this work? Especially since what we paid for it here is much less than its Australian value?

Mobile Fidelity - do you do this as a job? I'm keen to get some further information and perhaps a contact. Could you please send me a PM if you are able to help.

Many thanks, @@
