I think Gisajob is not asking HOW to go through this process the "normal" way... she wants to by pass the China border step.

Gisajob, to my recollection, the path from HK immigration(once you are out) leads you directly to the Chinese Lo Wu immigration...

I know there is a way to turn around, but you will only be allowed to do so with permission b/c they will ask you WHY you need to turn around when everyone who EXITS must ENTER China.

It's like entering the departure gates and after security check at the airport, you can get back out, but you would need to take the special exit.

On top of that, once you get back INTO immigration of HK (if you just turned around) you will be asked WHERE did you go or come from? How would you answer ? I didn't go in anywhere, I just exited and changed my mind and turned around.

It's just a problem of technicality.

Without a ENTER stamp of another country, how can you can a new stamp for entering into HK ?

That IS the point of having people exit and re-enter. It DID happen to one of my friends though. The officer was so busy chatting with another officer, he didn't even look at his passport as he re-entered... didn't even realize his passport was overdue !

You can always try it though.

(be sure to let us know how it goes!)

Completely untrue. You could board a plane to a place that does not stamp your passport (like your home country), fly back to Hong Kong and enter again (with a new stamp).

I was referring to countries that you enter and exit requiring a visa. Not home country.

I guess the officer would just ask Gisajob, where did you come from? She would either have to say the truth, I didn't go anywhere, I just exited HK and decided to turn around.

Or she can say I went to Lo Wu, which then they would look for the visa that she is supposed to have even for 1 day ...

Like I said, anything can happen at immigration/customs..... but based on logic, and a "hassle free" re-entry, it's just easier to go to Lo Wu and re-enter HK.

There is no shortcut. You must go through HK immigration, then China immigration, then back through both. This is the only way to activate your HK work visa.

As someone mentioned, some countries may not give you a chop in your passport, but this is HK and china and you must get the chop from one to pass to the next.

Gisajob, thanks for updating us what you did today.

It's true you don't have a problem exiting HK without a VISA, b/c a lot of people get visa on arrival at the border.

However, it's REENTERING that usually gets the question if there is any Deviation from the "proper" steps.

So for those using this as reference, it is in my opinion, Gisajob's luck, but not sure if it's that lucky everytime.

E-channel- usese HKID card... it's not the same thing. Has nothing to do with Passport. Did you re-enter using the E-channel or your passport?

BTW, did you get a NEW stamp for re-entry?

Did they ask any questions? Or they didn't check at all? (just curious)

I was wondering why Gisajob was talking about going through the E-channel....

Apologies in advance for hijacking thread but question relates to work visa. I accepted position with Hong Kong employer and waiting to receive work visa. In the interim, to avoid hassle to travel to/from China, after receiving my work visa, should I apply for tourist visa now in U.S. in conjunction of employer filing work visa?

I think gisajob mentioned the e-channel, as once you are eligible to go through that, that machine does not check whether you have a china visa or not. SO therefore i suppose that infers that a china visa is not a relevant item for immigration to check (on the Hk side).. and that makes a bit of sense. I don't know of what relevance is it to Hk officials if you have a China visa or not ... and you can always claim you didnt get one and need to come back.
