Driving directions: Central to Sai Kung

I took the the Eastern Harbour Tunnel towards Tseung Kwan O last time then up CWB Road.

Assuming no tunnel traffic, would it be as fast if not faster to go via the Cross Harbour Tunnel (and in the process reduce my toll fees)?

From my HK Driving Guide, it looks like it is possible to take Route 1 to Route 5 towards Kai Tak then to Route 7 where I could get on New Clearwater Bay Road towards Sai Kung.

Is this a massive detour instead of a shortcut?

Thank you.

If the EHT is the fastest "by far", then that's good to know.

The difference in tolls is not HK$5 though, it is HK$18 each way.

East tunnel is the Fastest, and least traffic to Central. The airport tunnel, and East corridor, and harbour tunnel, the traffic is SO bad.... and the toll is $ 20, just $ 5 less than East Tunnel, why would you swerve your car all the way over to there to get to Central from Clearwater Bay?

Sometimes we get so badly stuck at the Harbour Tunnel, we even swerve to the West Tunnel to get out of the jam.

East tunnel to Central, takes us 45 minutes during rush hour, 20 minutes with no traffic.

If you are coming from Central and there is no traffic (doesn't happen that often then the central x harbour tunnel is the cheapest and most direct way to Sai Kung. As you say turn off near Kai Tak, through Choi Hung and straight up the New Clearwater Bay Rd, turn left at the University onto Hirams Highway. 20 mins to Sai Kung from Choi Hung.
