it doesn't take very long to apply. you will need your passport, citizenship certificate or your birth cert and the baby's birth cert. all originals plus photocopies. there are also two forms your need to fill in. first you must apply for the baby to have citizenship and then he or she will then be eligible to get the passwport. you can do both things at once so make sure you bring all the right documents to the consulate as you will have to go to different floors to submit the two forms. also you will need the appropriate passport photo for your child. it is all on the aust consulate website.

What s1 has said is true.
Make sure you pay particular attention to the photo - they are very strict re size. Baby must have its eyes open, mouth shut, head directly facing camera.
I lay my newborn on the bed, put a sheepskin under the bedsheet (to keep baby from moving) and had my mother put her hand underneath the sheepskin to hold baby's head straight. I then stood on the bed and took the photo (after about 20 attempts I got one that could be used!). There is a photo shop at street level of SHK building (where the consulate is) - I suggest you have them developed there as they are aware of the exact specifications for an Aussie passport photo.
