pumps

I pump twice a day (for two feeds) and have an avent isis manual pump. I have lately developed extreme wrist pain. it's getting so bad that i can't pick baby up without wincing.

I'm thinking of getting an electric pump - would like to hear which are the good ones or alternatively ideas on how to avoid getting my wrists so sore...

usually i pump on one side and feed on the other as it's so much easier let down etc. so don't want/need a double pump.

hand pumps no good if you're regularly pumping 2X a day. It's just too hard.

I have a Ameda pump - very good as well - but much cheaper than the Medela. It has a clean pumping technology (like the Medela) and the only thing it is missing is the two phase expression - but you can do it manually with a quick twist of a knob.

I hired the medela lactina from Annerley. It was a godsend. Dual pumping and very smooth. I tried the battery operated medela and it was horrible and hurt. The lactina is quite cheap to rent at about 250 or such a month and well well worth it. You will need to buy the replaceable parts and bottle which is available but you can get those at the same time you hire the pump.

thanks all for your replies.

joshmom - exotic sounding though it is, sounds definitely like what i've got. my right wrist is far worse than my left and it is painful when i make a fist and bend outwards.

wow. guess i have to learn how to hold the baby.

HKCC - the isis is actually ok - i get 4-5oz in the morning and evening - morning it takes 10-15 min max and evening it takes a bit longer - i got it out of desperation when i was in the hospital and baby refused the breast. if it weren't for the painful wrists i'd continue to use it. Does Ameda have just one model or are there more?

Ftm - i don't live in HK - i live across the border - so don't know if they'll rent to me or not. i could ask i guess - but it's probably more practical to just buy one.

I am using Medela Swing. Quiet and efficient as a single pump. Recently my friend's hubby (who is an engineer) converted it into a double pump for me and guess what, it takes half the time but pump out almost twice as much. I work and pump twice in office. So far so good.

I used the isis in the evening when I was too tired and just wanted to veg in the evening.

But you'll notice that handpumps get harder to use as your baby gets older. Electrics are just more efficient at getting milk out...at around 7 months your supply drops quite a bit - so you should try and pump and store as much as possible now - as your ability to pump does drop in the future. (seems that no one really tells you this.) But I had enough of a milk supply stored in the freezer by the time my milk dropped so I was able to still give my baby one or two expressed milk feeds a day until she was a year old. (work from home but not professional to have a baby stuck to your boob...)

HKcc: totally agree with the part about not being professional to have a baby stuck 2 ur boob. Can't really stockpile milk inthe freezer - here they occasionally turn off electricity for maintenance. They do tell u about it beforehand It's happened twice in these two yrs - but it means that if u have a lot of anything in your freezer it's going to be wasted. i use the milk i express within 24hrs. one for when i'm in the office and the other for a dreamfeed.

am going shopping on sunday so will definitely look at the medela swing and the ameda one. presumably they're both available in eugene club.

joshmom: is the specialist u went to see in hong kong? if yes, would u mind giving me his contact details. i want to get my wrists sorted out asap.

Hi Kali,

Do you have a reasonable hospital near? Some rent out pumps.

Also, I'd have to agree that the Medela is brilliant.
