Hi, we would be staying in Sai kung area and are wondering whether it's more cost effective to rent a 2ooocc car on a yearly basis or purchase a 1-year old car? Thanks

It really depends on the type of car that you are looking for.
In June 2006 I bought a BMW 520i which was first registered in March 2005. Including the downpayment the cost for the year will come out to around HKD $136,150 (US$17,500 or US $1,457 per month). The resale value of the car is higher than the balance due on the loan. I could not have rented this particular model for less.
By the way I am moving back to the States and am looking to sell. I'm asking HKD $350,000. You'll see the add posted on Asia expat later today or tomorrow.
