Annual Leave Request Terminated

Dear all,

Please give me advice for following:

I work since 8 months for a International organisation and now I applied for my 3 weeks annual leave in August, however this is not approved.

Normally this is not an issue and I understand the business needs, however this is a special occasion bcs we are planning our wedding celebration backhome with friends and family.

I really need your advice what to do, I like my job and do very well, but management does not leave me a another choice besides resigning.

We planned our celebration event, invite our friends and family already and booked tickets.

Hope to hear from you and share experiences.

regards,

That's rough. Did they give you a reason? Didi you tell them why they wanted the leave? Maybe if you understand each other better you could reach a compromise - otherwise I would resign.

What does it say in your employment contract? It might say something like when you are eligible to take leave (e.g. taking 3 weeks after only 8 months might amount to taking leave in advance which is against the rules), or it might say that anyone's leave is subject to work volumes etc etc. Check your entitlements and then have a chat with them to see what can be organised. Maybe you might need to think about cutting down the amount of leave to be taken - if you want to keep your job, that is. Good luck.

What a shame! Had you booked all of this before you started the job? I think I would have checked for the time off before organising anything, but I agree try to explain why you need the time off and good luck!

Thank you all for your advice and remarks.

It is such a shame and I really feel bad about the situation.

Actually we got married in Hong Kong last year and now we would celebrate this back in Europe together with family.

For me my job is important however we made all the plans before I started the job and I even informed them that time. But now change of management brings me in this situation and ofcourse nothing was written down that time.

My husbands Annual leave is approved already a couple months ago and we can not change all our plans.

It is a big company and I do not see any major problems when I take my leave for 2 or even 3 weeks. Even when it is unpaid leave is fine with me.

The management know since 1 month that my wedding plans are fixed and everything is booked, I even went to the department head and confirmed.

I am so dissappointed bcs I really like what I do and want to continue to stay and do my job. No I need probably find something else....

MF - I think mausvanwijk's problem is that the original management didn't write down the approval so she can't hold that up as going back on something previously agreed.

mausvanwijk - I can understand your frustration as I had a similiar situation at my work but the reason my leave was turned down was that I would be taking an amount of leave in advance which is not permitted and my work does not readily allow unpaid leave. I agree with most of the suggestions above about speaking with your boss but likely sounds like the reason your leave was not approved is that you may be taking leave in advance given you only started there 8 months ago. Depending on your plans perhaps you could suggest 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks or part of it as unpaid leave.

I would be wary of quitting unless you are confident that you can get another job in the current market (perhaps speak to a recruiter first). I know from experience that it is always harder to get a job when not currently employed.

mausanvanwijk - i see warning signals about the company flashing brightly!!! don't ignore them but on the other hand weigh all your options carefully.
