We have been offered a relocation package to HK through my husband's firm. We are very excited and interested except for two issues:
First, my daughter is in 1st grade in a progressive school in NYC. She has really thrived there and is having a great experience. I went to a very traditional school and I know she would not do as well there. Does anyone have a suggestion of schools we might be interested in?
Second, we've been told the pollution has gotten really bad in the past three years, and that almost no part of HK has clear air. Is this really the case? Are there no relatively pollution-free areas? Having lived in LA, I'm really reluctant to expose my daughter and infant son to breathing in the high amounts of particulate matter that I did as a kid!
Thanks in advance for any advice.

International Montessorri School, IMS. (Mandarin and English)
The Hong Kong Academy
TutorTime in RedHill (Mandarin and English and outdoor play area)
These are probably the closest you will find to 'progressive' schools here. You will want to contact them ASAP to see about registering/wait lists, etc... (google for websites and details).
You can also ask your husband's firm if they have any debentures or contacts at any schools.
The pollition is bad, but it is part of life here. Living on the South Side is a bit better pollution wise - Tai Tam (Pacific View next to The American Club has great facilities), Repulse Bay, Stanley.
Also, if you get a 'look-see' trip, be sure to view the schools and ask your relocation counselor lots of questions, etc... - it is their job to assist you!
Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice. I have heard many good things about Repulse Bay and Pacific View. I will check out the schools you gave me on our go-see in June.
Thanks again.

The Harbour School is also a very progressive school. It offers three different pathways - mainstream, enrichment or learning support depending on your child's needs.
The website is www.theharbourschool.edu.hk
