How much to spend on a B'day present??

Hi,

We are still relatively new to HK but one thing I have worked out is that it is very easy to offend people if you don't do the 'right' thing! My daughter has been invited to a 4yo birthday party. Is there some socially/HK appropriate amount I should spend on a present??

Also, do parents stay at the party with the kids?

Thanks

We have a limit of $80-100 for school friends birthday presents, many people I know also limit it to around $100. A bit more if its a closer friend. Many parents do stay, or even worse send their helper and siblings. Again fine if its a close friend and more of a family party but as a mum of a 5 and 7 year old still going through the party stage, its a pain having to cater for so many extra adults and siblings, plus the space issue if you have it at home. Sometimes i've stayed when the kids were younger purely because of distance e.g the party was on the other side of the Island and we're in Clearwater Bay. I think if you want to stay, then at least phone the party host first.

Thanks cd. That's what I was tinking but spoke with a friend and she was saying she spent about $100 on a present and then actually recieved what she had purchased as part of the goodie bag at the end of the party. Hoping to avoid that myself!

Sammy, I usually pay between $150/$200. As for the goodie bags I think you'll find that everyone does this here. Holding a birthday party is expensive in HK.

More parties that my 2 youngest have been too recently are switching to the 1 small present idea instead of party bags, e.g beanie babies (from the market), small lego set, paint box, colouring book, hair things for girls, play makeup, water pistols etc.

Mine too. Infact my son recently went to a fourth birthday party and he came away with a toy camera.
