Good Day,

My wife and I will be moving to Kowloon the last week of June. We are both in our mid 20s and need some advice, as well would love to meet professional people near our age.

I am a Chef and will be taking over the Felix restaurant at The Peninsula. My wife will spend the first few months getting us settled and than I would love her to become involved in local children's charities. Any ideas?

Anyone live or hear anything about the new apartments on Kowloon called The Arch?

I was also hoping for some advise on were to purchase a quality King size bed and basic house hold items. One item I was really hoping to locate was a king size bed frame that has built in drawers under it.

I truly apprecaite the help and look forward to hearing everyone's input.

Hi there.. You can check out this website, under resources, as there is a used furniture section, you make be able to find a bed like that. Otherwise you can check out Indigo, Tequilla Kola, and of course Ikea, (Ikea has a huge store up in Shatin) which are located on the HK island side, huge furniture warehouse called Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau.

For your wife, there are a few places she can check, on being Mothers Choice, which is a small home for young mothers, and babies. HK island location address is Mothers Choice, Bowen Rd.

good luck with your move, and with your position at Felix !

As mentioned in the post by sandiexxxx....Horizon Plaza is also a great place to purchase things for your home.

Besides Mothers Choice there is very well established organization called Po Leung Kuk.

It's located in Causeway Bay. The provide temporary and long term accomodation and school for kids from the ages of newborn to 18 years old.

The children are there because their family temporarily are not able to care for them

(ie..in jail, sick, drug dependency, financial problem...etc)

They always need someone to help play with the kids (especially those ages newborn to 3 yrs old),

give them a bottle, feed them ).

You have to make an appointment and go through an orientation before you become a volunteer.

Ps. they usually have at least 12 newborns and about 20-30 kids between 9 months to 2 years of age.

The babies are so happy when you play with them.

It's so sad because there are so many babies that when I volunteered for 2 hours at a time - I could only spend about 5-10 minutes with each one.

The babies are waiting in their cribs waiting to play, be fed, changed or bathed.

Hi silverchef, we looked at The Arch a few months ago. It is conveniently located above Kowloon MTR station in quite a nice open area. A shopping Mall was being constructed underground alongside the MTR and there was work on an underground link from the MTR to The Arch and other apartment blocks in that open area.

Another really nice apartment block in that same complex is called Harbour View. Those apartments have spectacular views back onto HK Island. Lovely perspex railings on the balcony so really opening up the apartment.

We decided against both The Arch and HarbourView and settled onto HK Island as our workplace is on the Island but for you working at The Peninsula I would say it is a very convenient location.

Thanks every one this is a huge help. I was able to look at a couple apartments while I was on my interview. The Arch was the one I thought we'd be most comfortable in.

I was curious the rental agent said rents negociable, this is very new from the States. How much lower are the owners willing to go normally.

Lastly is there any house hold goods I should bring along with my move?

You can buy everything you need in Hong Kong. Do bring personal effects to make your apartment feel like home ie: photos, pictures, decorative stuff. If you like your bed maybe consider bringing it - alot of westerners have trouble finding a big enough bed although it can be done... but beware apartments and bedrooms may be smaller than you are used to and may not fit your current furnishings. Sogo and Wing On have the best selection of beds annd bedding I've seen in HK. Ikea and another similar store, Pricerite, also do beds...and then there are the official branded bed shops ie: Serta in Vicwood Plaza Sheung Wan.

Thanks for the feed back, Katetam-- any sugestions on other apartments? I was shown about 10 apartments and not to sound too stuck up The Arch was the only unit I liked and its really not the building but the size of the bed room. My wife and I are both over 6'2" so we have to have a King size bed and the arch was the only decent apartments that I can fit that size bed into and even thats all that will fit.

But please if there are any other suggestions/coments on apartments please let me know.

Again thanks for all the help.

What about over the harbour on the island? Appreciate you will be working at The Pen but think of the glorious ride to and from work you'll have every day?

Also if your wife will take on charities such as Mothers Choice, etc...they are located on the island too.

If you choose the island look at Mid-Levels, McDonald Road and cheaper than the rent at The ARch if my friends rent there (The Arch) is anything to go by and bigger apartments too.

Good luck silverchef and look forward to tasting you at The Felix!

Hi Silverchef, i live in the arch with my bf, we recently moved from UK. i have no idea about the prices but the facilities here are amazing and the service is fantastic. There is a swimming pool and gym on the 62 floor over looking the view of HK island. Also library, computer and creche facilities. There is alot of construction here as they are trying to attract businesses to the area. Great location and easy comute to TST or HKisland. hope this helps and good luck!

A few thoughts, if they are still timely:

(1) At the risk of upsetting your plans, have you thought about just getting a serviced apartment for a few months, and just taking your time to get to know which areas you really want to live in? I guess it depends on whether being close to the Pen is the only really important criterion, in which case the Arch could make a lot of sense. But in HK, as anywhere, the specific area you live in really defines your experience of the city. And the areas that are not far apart geographically are worlds apart in terms of the experience they will give you.

(2) In general, older buildings have bigger sized apartments than newer ones (and often have much more character as well). The Arch may be an exception here: I haven't seen inside it.

Hope that helps.

Where are you from? There are a lot of wives here who make friends by joining the American's Women's Association. They have so many activities that your wife could be busy every day.

Only 40% of members are American. The group is open to all women, which makes it interesting. There are charities, social activities and interesting day trips. There is a Foon Ying group which means Welcome in Cantonese. A group of new women meet and a volunteer shows them around, etc. It's a wonderful organization. I love going to CHAT, which is a coffee morning which is held every week. Please check out our site. Your wife could be insanely busy if she wants. http://www.awa.org.hk/

Hello.

I have just moved to HK myself. I feel sure that you will like Hong Kong (as will your wife).

Felix is a great resturant. My wife and I are going there on Sunday to celebrate our first wedding anniversary (so I hope it will be as good as last time! :)

As for beds: IKEA. Seriously, one of the best places.

Flats: A nightmare. The size that you are told is certainly not what the actual size is so be aware of this. Older flats tend to have more space (but can have maintence problems). As with anything, the further out you go the better the deal.

I'm up for some socialising (with the mrs) happy to suggest a few places, drop me a line through my web site: www.alib.co.uk

Hello,

I would definitely check out Ikea if I were purchasing my own furniture. Often, flats come furnished.
