I have been offered a job in KL and am trying to find out about tax - how much does one pay; can one avoid/reduce how much one pays - and also about rental prices for a decent sized family home/condo (around 3000sq ft) in a nice, ex-part part of town. Any help would be great.

My name is Helena, and I have properties down in KL, so happen to check the website and saw your enquiry.
I have a brand new apt in Cental Kl, very close to the Twin Towers, 2,400 sq ft net, high ceiling, built by one of the most renowned developers in KL, modern, high quality, you thought it's an apt in the States in terms of style and quality (not that I am pro American).. much better than any apts in Hong Kong. Monthly rental at RM10,000 (HKD20,000).
I also have another character house of close to 3,000 sq ft plus a well established garden on 6,700 sq ft plot of land in Ampang area (Embassy area), used to be rented by an English/French couple (the wife is a painter, very artistic). I would say it's like houses in Shouson Hill in Hong Kong, oldy worldy. Only 15 minutes away from Central KL via highway, rental at RM8,500 per month (ie HKD17,000)
With regard to tax issue, I can introduce you to my accountant in KL, I am sure he is happy to give you advice, even via email.
My email address is helena@helenalee.co.uk, as it's the first time I use this website, so I don't know how the communication works.

FunchalPP - thanks for your reply. I don't know how to send you a private mail but would be very interested in finding out what research you did on tax. Basically, I would like to pay as little tax as possible and would like to work out if there are ways to reduce my tax bill.

OK. I'll send you a personal message. At the top left, click Control Panel & then inbox. The income tax info is in the local language(Bahasa Malaysia), so a friend kindly took me thru each line item.
The tax submission is 30th April for each yr, can be done online or hardcopy. Either way, around Mar-April, you can go to the tax office where there's a conference room with PCs & the tax officers are stationed there to guide the taxpayer to do their online filing.

Schofes, you can refer to the latest from carlover's link to determine whether you will be resident or non resident & also the personal tax relief for resident.
I opted to be relocated to Shanghai, so did not work in Malaysia.
