I am relatively new to HK and would love to get a job in teaching English. How do I go about it and do I have to have a TEFA or TECL certificate. I have heard alot of people do it but I am not sure how to go about it. Any info or phone numbers would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello!

It is worth getting a proper qualification to teach as most teaching establishments won't take you without one, also the experience is invaluable - there's a recent post in Practical about this.

If you don't have a working visa you won't be able to get one to teach without a relevant qualification.

Have you tried the British Council?

Yes I already have the working visa. I just need to know who to call to get a job. I dont have any TECL or TEFA though. Are there any places that don't require such quals.

Thanks

Most places will require one.

You could get volunteer work teaching English with out a qual. (doing conversation practice etc for refugee charities for example) but it's unlikely that you would get paid work I think. The courses don't take very long (1 month to 10 weeks depending on full/part time).
