Baby Sunscreen

ORIGINAL POST

I've been told that sunscreen should not be used on babies under 6 mths old. Is this true? Baby has fair skin and is now 3 mths old. Aside from keeping him out of midday sun & exposed only limited periods of time, I'm still worried he'll get sunburned. Any advice? If ok to use sunscreen, any recommendation on brands?

Bump to Babes is a great place to buy high quality products. But I never put snscreen on my son till he was about 1 1/2. That's what people told me not to put sunscreen at a very young baby. I just avoided taking him too much from 10 to 2 pm.

I agree sunscreen should be held off until at least baby is 6 months. You never know how baby's skin can react... too sensitive at the young age. No matter how "natural" or "safe" the Sunscreen claims.... I think should hold off.

While you take baby out for the first 6 months, just put on a cap, or bonnet, and put baby in the stroller with sun cover.... 5-10 minutes out in the hot sun is enough for now.... plenty of time for sun shine after 6 months.

My ped told me if baby needs sunshine ( when jaundice in the first month) he said, put baby near window... that's alright to get sunrays that way.... but not in the outdoor, no cover, scorching sun.....

Avene's sunscreen was great, Kiehl's, and a bunch of brands from Eugene Club are excellent too.

after 1 year old, I just use Banana boat, coppertone, or the Mentholatum brand( has baby sunsreen).

You are right you shouldn't use any sunscreen on your baby until it is one year old. Just keep it away from the sunshine between 10 and 3 o'clock. Cover it well and leave it in the shadow....
