Plugs are completely different. We have 7-8 adapters floating around the house for various things. You can bring anything that has a built in adapter which says Input- 100-240volts like a laptop, iPod/Bose speaker or simple things like pda and phones(gsm) which you can charge with simple adapters. We also got our Dell desktop since they have a voltage switching mechanism at the back. Don't get anything that requires a transformer.

thanks-what about smaller things like a curling iron? i have a chi(flat iron) that i was planning on bringing, and some various lamps. can you get a plug adaptor for those or just buy new ones?

See if they can take inputs from 110-220 volts. The plug adapters only work if the stuff can handle the voltage change. If not, then don't get them.

We did not get any our lamps:( and toaster (really cute one and brand new on top of it) Transformers are useless- heavy to be lugged around/ and burn out fast and could spoil your stuff. Plus you don't want that curling iron near your hair if the change does not work out.

It's not the adaptors; it's the voltage (okay and the Hz). Here's a handy guide.

If you buy a 220v appliance here, the good thing is that you will be able to use it on your travels around the region (except Japan) and Europe.
