Separation Anxiety

My son will be 10 mths old in a couple of days time and since he had roseola 2 weeks ago and now with a cough and runny nose, everytime we put him in his cot, playcot or walker he cries really hard. This also happens when we change his nappies. Normally we pat him to sleep and move him onto his cot with no problem but now he wakes up when we do this. Is this separation anxiety? Sometimes, I really need to put him down to go to the toilet, cook or wash and I hate hearing him cry. Any advice on how to solve this.

If you meet his needs now, his needs will go away. So much of parenting is one step forward, two steps back. Let him be 'the baby' for a bit and then he will gradually move forward on his own again. You can always put him in a baby backpack or on the floor at your feet as you are doing chores. You can give him pots and pans to play with when cooking or let him splash in the tub while you are on the toilet.

They are babies for such a short time...this too shall pass.

hi,

my son had roseola when he was about 9 months old and he was sooooo miserable.

so even though i am a believer that kids should learn to sleep independently, blah, blah, blah, extra cuddles and some bending of the rules here and there is fine. they are only babies and really sick.

when he was ill, we would do anything to make him comfortable, sleep next to him on the floor for company, he'll sleep with us, we'll go in to him asap when he cries at night (instead of the usual wait 5 mins)....if you know he is not deliberately acting up and is in discomfort and therefore needs mummy more, give it to him but once he is better and 100% recovered, then try to adjust him back to his own routine again.

Thanks for your advice. My son is getting better with less phelgm as he cough and less of a runny nose. His appetite is getting better too - we were worried as he took in less than half of his normal feed for the past 2 weeks and lost weight too. We have put him on the floor more now and he loves crawling and cruising around on his two little feet. As for sleeping, yesterday we managed to move him into his cot but he woke up at 5am this morning crying and we let him sleep with us. He seems to sleep better with us around - maybe the smell makes him more secure.
