Venue for a lecture

Hi,

I'm looking to organise a lecture for a visiting Buddhist teacher in HK. Venues I was thinking of were cafe's with private function rooms or hiring a room in a library, or any other bright ideas?

Has anyone been to an event like that before, and remembers the venue and whether it was good / bad?

I don't want the event to be 'corporate' - won't book a room in the Shangri-La! Just a local place geared up for this sort of thing - perferably not a overly 'new-age' type place either.

I was thinking of something in central / wanchai area - but willing to consider other venues on the island.

Thanks - new in HK and not sure how this sort of thing works here yet.

Ant.

What about the Fringe in Central? They have several different venues within the building that might work.

I have organised lectures and courses and used the Helena May on Garden Road as the venue. You don't have to be a member and the staff were extremely accomodating, can organise refreshments, and the usual presentation audio visiuals, whiteboards. A couple of rooms of different sizes available to seat from 6 - 30 or so. google helena may. It is a unique HK venue and very serene inside. Foreign Correspondents Club also has rooms available but you may need to book through a member.

Or try the Visual Arts Centre on Kennedy Road.

HK Arts Center,

HKAPA

HK Space Museum

Small function rooms in hotels are good idea.

HK city Hall

We organized lectures/seminars in Eaton hotel's function rooms, Royal Plaza's chinese restaurant has good VIP function rooms, affordable too.

If you are doing it by non-profit, you can get major discounts, and subsidy if renting from government venues.

Venue depends on how many people you expect attending, and what's your budget?

Thanks for the replies - yes, we'll be doing it on a non-profit basis. I will look into all the suggestions above so far, thanks again.

This time around (August lecture) our expectations for number of people is something in the region of 30 or so. But next year, a well-

known teacher will be coming over and then we'll need a place for up to 200 people. I probably need to book that in the not too distant future though, as I understand the better and larger venues tend to get reserved early. So ideas for both most appreciated.

Re budget, there is some flexibility, but like any small organisation, the aim is to keep costs to a minimum - I will certainly look into the government venues idea.

Regards, Ant.
