18 Months - Shoes, Pajamas/Blanket ?

Hi

3 Questions...

Pajamas/Blankets

Our boy is now 16 months, pretty soon he is going to grow out of his 'pajamas' essentially jump suits with feet.

We swaddled until 5.5 months.

We never used a grow bag, and don't really want to start now.

They don't seem to make large jump suits with feet... so...

When is a baby/toddler too old for those jump suits with (or without) feet?

What do toddlers wear to bed?

At what age do they understand what a blanket is for and use it safely (urm, not that we would need this in HK summer!)?

Shoes

He has been walking since 11 months, and is now a super walker.

At home, he is always barefoot.

Going out, he wears those soft leather 'slipper/socks' for beginner walkers. (well, sometimes he is barefoot too!!)

I have always read that proper shoes are not that great as they can stunt foot growth and cause delays in walking, running, etc... as it is better for toddlers to be barefoot.

So when do we 'upgrade' to the next type of shoe?

and what is the next kind of shoe?

We want something that will be GOOD for his feet, not too hot (or keep them warm if we are somewhere cold) and protect them a bit more than the leather slippers.

We are planning a trip to Footstop, so I want to know what I should consider.

Thank you so much!!

Stanley Market along the front bit where the fruit stall is on the corner are a couple of kids clothes stall one of which sells bigger sized footed pjs. I bought some recently for my 2.5 year old. My kids still have not got a clue how to use a blanket they always sleep uncovered even if I tuck them in!

the footed pjs -

Marks and Spencers used to carry them. (not sure about now) Mothercare also carried them in the winter months.

They are more common in the winter time in the US - and as Gap and Old Navy definitely sell them for up to 5 years old, they must be around in Stanley somewhere.

I just went recently and bought some fabric to have gro bags made by a seamstress. The bag option supposedly prevents the early out of crib climbers. AS my elder mastered it at 20 months (it was devastating to me) I'm trying to keep #2 in a bit longer - so she has some very very lightweight grobag type things for the summer. (cotton sheeting.)

crj,

ours is 14 months plus. we stopped the pj jumpsuits with covered feet when he started walking - i just thought it was ridiculous to wear that when he was walking. so i bought 2 jumpsuits from mothercare without covered feet. it's technically a good option but the 100000 buttons drive me nuts

so what i do now is just a longsleeved buttoned cotton shirt and his grobag for bedtime!

shoes: ours took his 1st steps at 11 months and was/is generally barefoot (at home, if he's going somewhere but not getting out of his pushchair, why bother right). i bought those soft leather ones (tip toey joeys) but he grew out of them pretty quick and i have to say, he is more a runner than walker so i thought he needed something more sturdy. so he's been on clarks sandals, we love it. we are probably going to get new ones this week as he is outgrowing those too!

alot of my friends like to get those that cover the toes but it's not completely covered with holes and all so that the feet can "breathe"....

Wow - thanks for all the great replies!!

All very very helpful.

He still hasn't figured out the snaps, so maybe we will keep them until then, and go searching in Stanley again for larger sizes (per PPG's comment) (we use 18-24 months now), and then change to those cheapy pj's that I have seen in the markets (like Cara), and look for more elastic legs (thanks Joshmom!)

HKCC - I am off to the USA for a few days in June, I will check out the cheapy shops for winter pajama sales! Khols, Target, TJ Maxx and Costco here I come :)

Blanket - we will wait much longer, that was more thrown in out of curiosits :)

For shoes, we are heading to Footstop to get some sandals/shoes with ankle support but cool enough for HK summer...

Thanks agian everyone - very helpful... I was beginning to think I was missing out on some big secret about PJs that nobody told us!

If you're off to the US, try Old Navy, Gap and Carter's. When they go on SALE, their toddler pajamas will only cost you $15 for 2 pairs!

I have a 22 month old and in this hot weather, she tends to wear 2 piece pjs now. I just went to Jusco (Tsuen wan) and they have so many different kinds of pjs. And good prices. My daughter gets very hot and she wears the 2 piece shorts and t-shirt ones and even some 1 piece nightie ones. I find the 1 piece a pain for un snapping if a diaper needs to be changed. I did buy some back in Canada at Walmart. This coming winter... well not sure what I will do, especially if she is potty trained. I will need 2 pieces. Otherwise it will be 1 pieces.

A blanket, well she has 1 one her bed, but doesn't quite get the concept of it. I do cover her, but she hates her feet covered, if it is cooler, then I put socks on her.

we LOVE Carters, that is what our babies both live in.

Jassy - I was wondering about potty training, our boy already goes to the toilet in the daytime, but we don't wake him at night for a toilet visit yet... hmmm

crj, you have yur boy daytime potty trained already. Lucky you.

When I was at Jusco buying pj's the evening and night time potty training crossed my mind. One piece won't work if they are trained. Little things we forget about.

jassy - we do the chinese/asian style of 'elimination communication training'. We started at 6 weeks, and he has been on the toilet since 6 months. So now at 16 months he says 'poo poo' or 'wee wee' when he has to go to the toilet.

But it isn't perfect, so at home he wears really cute training pants from doubibou and cloth nappies for his naps, and when we go out he is still in a nappy.

It's great, we will start soon with our new baby too.

i guess this diverts from the original thread but our 14 months old will gesture and grab his nappy before and after he does a poo and head towards the toilet (we usually wash instead of wipe)....wonder if this is a sign he is ready for potty training or premature still?

Wheelymate, I know you started with elimination communication training - I say if he grabs his nappy and heads to the toilet - whip it off and get him on the toulet seat to see what happens! But don't force him, etc...

We actually have a kid who love sitting on the toilet so much sometimes it is hard to get him off :)

SHOES

We went to FOOTSTOP today, they were GREAT.

They tried him in sandals and cloth shoes with rubber soles. The he was much better with the cloth shoes by start-rite so we got those - YEAH!

The staff there are sooo good, they really helped us a lot and checked the width, etc... They still say he should be barefoot most of the time, but we need shoes for the playground and restaurants.

Thanks for all the advice.

that's the thing, we have taken the potty out and tried to seat him on it once when he was doing a poo but he really freaked out! but my hubby has been dumping baby's poo into the toilet and flushing it down...hoping to show our kid how it all works. i am wondering if i should try to buy a baby toilet seat to attach to the regular one.

we bought shoes today too! they grow so super quick. we bought a pair of clarks...quite dull and nerdy but he really needed a new pair. and his right feet is 1/2 size larger than the left one and he's got a broad feet so we went for clarks as they offer 1/2 sizes and broader styles.

crj, that is great to hear about the potty training. Hopefully, our daughter will be ready in another month or so. She now wants her diaper changed after a poo and sometimes after a wee. We have tried her on the potty, but she just makes grunting sounds

Gina Ford's Potty Training in a Week book worked for us. It really just took a week! And my son didn't feel forced at all.
