Generally, for insurance you need to have been with the insurance company for at least 12 months i believe before they will entertain payouts for pregnancy.

If you have a hk id card, you can use the public system. I just did it with my now 5 month old- not luxurious by any means, but I now have a healthy baby. The checkups were free and the delivery at Queen Mary Hospital was around HK$500 total! (There are certain optional tests you will need to pay for.) You are looking at up to HK$40,000 or so for delivery at a private hospital, not including any delivery complications, checkups, etc. you will need over the nine months. I started out private and switched to public once I saw my first bill for the private doc visit + blood work (óur medical insurance doesn't cover maternity). I also had to wait about 30 minutes to see the private doctor which was a slap in the face after a couple thousand dollar bill for the visit! If we have a second child, I might consider getting maternity insurance, but even that is not cheap, plus there is the waiting period. Don't worry about hospitals until late in the pregnancy- do the hospital tours by all means, but I've heard that it's difficult to book a spot in a private hospital in advance anyway. For additional info, visit the "pregnany and fertility" forum. You can also visit the other well-known HK expat forum - I don't think I can mention it here though, but it's where I got a lot of info on how to have a baby in HK. You can private message me for the website address if you like.
