Leaving Hong Kong - Charity

ORIGINAL POST

My husband and I are moving back to the US in a couple of weeks and have some furniture/electronic items that we would like to donate to charity. Does anyone know of a charitable organization in Hong Kong that would qualify us for a tax deduction on our US taxes? I have already contacted Crossroads and they say they are only registered with the US for cash donations. Any ideas? Thanks :-)

Steady on chaps. People give for different reasons. Do you think that HK tycoons give out of the kindness of their hearts? Anyway...

Orbis Hong Kong is a registered 501(c)(3) charity but I believe it would want cash donations (nowhere to put a sofa on a plane).

Have you checked with the Internal Revenue website?

Daddy Long Legs & WHAT?

We are going to make the donation anyway but if we can also benefit from a tax deduction I really don't see why that is a bad thing!!

Claire, thank you for your kind response.

alternatively, if stuff is in good condition, consider putting it up for sale on asiaxpat and pledge to donate any proceeds to an international charity back home that will qualify you for tax deductions.

are donations to US charities deductible for the purposes of HK taxes?

Good for you, what a great thought!

Some charities are registered in multiple countries, I have made cash donations before and had the option of claiming it in either HK or USA.

But for furniture/goods, I think Vibe's suggestion is the best.

I have just received a warning from the ed for saying that I had written something offensive....I;m not sure how anything I wrote could have been taken that way. I expressed my opinion. I have donated much time and money to charities over the years. I did it because I wanted to, not for personal gain or glory. I find it quite disturbing that people make decisions about who they are going to donate things to based on their tax cuts. This is my personal opinion which I understand may be as offensive to some as their opinion is to me. How can your reasons be honourable if you decide against a donation to a particular charity if it doesn't benefit you?

In the past have had other expat friends try to donate their items to charity but most charity's in will not take second hand stuff particularly clothing and if they take furniture and appliances it is rare as the product saftey is difficult to guarnatee as it has been used.

At times the Salavation Army in Yau Ma Tei and the YMCA in Cheung Sha Wan have been known to take items of there is a need but neither is a USA registered 301C but are Hong Kong registered charities.
