DVD - Amp - TV = HELL of a connection problem

Hello,

Please would you help me with the connection of my new DVD to my existing TV and Amplifier?

I have tried to do this myself, but I am having a huge sound problem with the most basic of connections from the DVD player to the TV!

The DVD is a surround sound 5 speaker system, and it seems as if the connections at the back for audio are a little different.

I didn't buy it as it was a timely giveaway from NOW (our existing DVD died the day prior).

Current connections:

TV to Amp - OK for normal TV viewing and sound.

DVD to TV - Great picture, extremely low sound. I have to jack the volume control to very high to even get normal sound volume.

Have used the S-Cable for image, and the red/white/yellow component cable for audio (with obvious non-use of the yellow)

DVD to Amp - no cables seem to work. I don't have a coaxial cable or optical cable. Are these strictly necessary? Or any other options?

(priced a coax cable in fortress for $920!!!)

Brands:

TV: Sony Trinitron Wega KV-ES34

What I can get is this: great picture, really low sound through the TV, and nothing through the Amp except the original TV/Amp connection

Amplifier: Yamaha RX-V496

DVD: giveaway through NOW Broadband TV. Tiburon by Hyundai corporation. PDVD-3000LV. Comes with 5 speakers.

LOVE to hear any thoughts on how I can:

at minimum - get good sound through to the TV from the DVD without having to hook up all the crappy speakers that the DVD came with.

at Maximum - get all components working well together.

Many thanks in advance!!

I recently got the same DVD player model (PDVD-3000LV) as a gift...

I connected the S-cable and the other three cables(yellow, white and red) to the Xbox of my TV. But the player doesnt seem to recognise the files present in the dvd

I wrote the dvd as normal dvd (not video dvd) and they contain movie files (in many formats like .avi.rmvb,etc.). But when the DVD is played, the files are not shown in the title menu. It just shows the folders and a back option.

I also wrote a dvd that contains only audio and video songs. When loaded, the player shows the files present in the DVD (not all of them but most of them). It also plays the songs when selected. So what is the problem with the other discs?

I also have another problem. The player does not display the file names in the menu. It just shows as a blank tab.

Details:

Monitor : Philips 42FD 9954

TV receiver : Philips FTR 9964

DVD player : Hyundai Tiburon PDVD-3000LV

Pls help me out. Many thanks in advance to all who help me out here!!!
