DVD - Amp - TV = HELL of a connection problem

Hello,

Please would you help me with the connection of my new DVD to my existing TV and Amplifier?

I have tried to do this myself, but I am having a huge sound problem with the most basic of connections from the DVD player to the TV!

The DVD is a surround sound 5 speaker system, and it seems as if the connections at the back for audio are a little different.

I didn't buy it as it was a timely giveaway from NOW (our existing DVD died the day prior).

Current connections:

TV to Amp - OK for normal TV viewing and sound.

DVD to TV - Great picture, extremely low sound. I have to jack the volume control to very high to even get normal sound volume.

Have used the S-Cable for image, and the red/white/yellow component cable for audio (with obvious non-use of the yellow)

DVD to Amp - no cables seem to work. I don't have a coaxial cable or optical cable. Are these strictly necessary? Or any other options?

(priced a coax cable in fortress for $920!!!)

Brands:

TV: Sony Trinitron Wega KV-ES34

What I can get is this: great picture, really low sound through the TV, and nothing through the Amp except the original TV/Amp connection

Amplifier: Yamaha RX-V496

DVD: giveaway through NOW Broadband TV. Tiburon by Hyundai corporation. PDVD-3000LV. Comes with 5 speakers.

LOVE to hear any thoughts on how I can:

at minimum - get good sound through to the TV from the DVD without having to hook up all the crappy speakers that the DVD came with.

at Maximum - get all components working well together.

Many thanks in advance!!

Hi,

simply purchase a coax cable.

This should cost around $30 at the computer centre.

Your amplifier (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200238&CTID=5000300)

Surely has a digital input (required for decent surround anyway) which will accept co-ax from the DVD.

All you need to do is :

TV DVD Amplifier 5.1 speaker setup

Let us know how it goes.

Rob - you're right. I just spent about half an hour on the telephone with the Hyundai guy. Poor love.

I still don't understand why they would make this type of weird product, (my old Yamaha & Philips DVD's never had a cap on the audio output to the TV)

BUT, as i got it for free, and your coax cable price is multitudes lower than fortress overpriced 920.00 one, I'll skedaddle off and have a go.

I'll let you know if it all works! :)

thanks!

Why are you still using the Yamaha amp? The Hyundai Tiburon PDVD-3000LV is not just a DVD player, it is a Home-Theater-in-a-Box (HTIB) with a built-in amplifier, if I am not mistaken.

However, if you really want to use the Yamaha in addition to the Hyundai, your connection arrangement for the audio is incorrect. Problem is that you have only connected two channels from the Hyundai to the Yamaha with the red/white/yellow cable (which BTW is not a component cable, but a composite video cable with two single channel audio cables). Hence, what you are doing is sending only two of the five channels of audio from the Hyundai to the Yamaha, probably explaining the soft sound (especially if said to channels are not the front left and right).

Possible solutions if you want to keep the Yamaha in your system:

1) As mentioned above, run one digital cable from the Hyundai to the Yamaha (could be coaxial or optical cable, depending on outputs the Hyundai has and what inputs the Yamaha). As per above, price for such a cable should be less than HKD100 (more expensive cables make no difference in sound quality).

2) Run five analogue connections from the Hyundai to the Yamaha (three more connections in addition to the two existing ones you already have), most likely using RCA plugs. Depending on which outputs you have/use on the Hyundai, you might still have turn up the volume on that unit.

Thank you Beachball, you're right, the Hyundai does have all those things built in. I am unsatisfied with the sound quality though.

The Yamaha amp that we have, and accompanying speakers are far superior.

Also, thanks for explaining that the yellow/red/white cable is 'composite'. I'm learning everyday! And now it makes more sense.

I did get a handy hint from a guy at Fortress that I'd like to pass along: it is possible to use the YELLOW cable from the composite cable as the coaxial. Worked perfectly, and didn't have to go out and buy another cord - we have so many of the composite's here.

I've decided to forgo the TV audio in this - apparently it is something that cannot be changed, and has to do with the output settings of the DVD.

cheers.

Grrr!!! After an hour of struggle I've given up. Guys, does this hyundai 3000LV has audio input or not? My old one used to have audio in (red-white) which I could connect my NOW TV output and my pc output. Now as understand it plays only dvd and radio? No audio in?

okay, an update. If i turn the power off and then on (by pushing the button on the device not by remote) while NOW output is connected to audio input of hyundai I hear sound of NOW TV for 1sec then it goes to LOAD mode and then says NO DISC and of course I don't get any sound.
