Is the a difference in freshness or something when you buy the exact same brand of milk, whether it is in the cold section or the boxed oned on the shelf? Mainly if it is for a child.

Jassy, there was a thread a while ago comparing fresh milk and UHT milk on the moms and dads thread.
http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/momsdads/threads/99875.asp
Apparently a small amount of the benefits (vitamins etc) are lost in the UHT process and sometimes the UHT milk is not fortified with extra vitamin D, so most parents seem to give their children FRESH milk (ie Masters Pura Full Fat) when they can, but have some small containers of St Pauls or similar (Full Fat) for taking with them when they go out.
But saying that, the vitamins lost are very minor, and when the choice is between a SAFE UHT Milk and Fresh Milk from an unknown/unreliable source then UHT is a better choice. (especially relevant when travelling in remote areas, etc...)
Once the UHT container is actually open, the shelf life is the same as for fresh milk. It only has a longer shelf life when not yet opened.
If you google search for UHT and Toddlers you will find a variety of answers.

Mental case, more likely that they add water and suger to the milk in China to make a bigger profit ;-)

Thanks for all the repli es. Very interesting too.
We buy the fresh Pura, but, our Park n Shop always runs out. I wanted to buy the UHT as back up, so it sounds like it will be fine. My little one is 23 months old

Jassy - that is EXACLTY what we have done. But have only used the small 'to go' size of St Pauls when we go out as 'extra emergency supply'
But when they are out of Pura I usually buy Select instead. We also now just stock up on Pura :)

We use Farm Milk...even the low fat is made from fresh milk not milk drink or milk beverages. We have them deliver every other days. So far, pretty happy with the taste and freshness.
