The rights of tenants in HK.?

Hi Gang wonder if you can help. My family moved into a property and found there was a leak in the bathroom on the floor.Something to do with the room being on defferent levels. The landlord tried to fix the problem. It didn't work for long and meanwhile the landlord sells the property to someone else without letting the incumbent know there was a problem. The new landlord never enters the property to see what its like and buys it unseen.(We had no idea the property was being sold incidentally)

The bathroom gets worse, we contact new landlord and explain and landlord says go ahead and get quote. When landlord gets quote she refuses to pay anymore than 10 percent (total $28,000) and says we'll have to cough up the rest complaining that she didn't know about the problem previous and wants to wash her hands of the problem. Nice pun eh!

So where to for us poor little old tenants? Where do we stand legally in HK?

Is there a tenants tribunal or an organisation that deals with grievances of this nature?

Thanks for your help.

I posted a link to the relevant page(s) on the Govt website this morning, but it seems to have disappeared. I'll redo it in the morning in case you are still looking for the information.

Hey TC I posted a reply to you as well which also disappeared.Even though I got the gist of the pages on the website before it went AWOL I would like to save it so if you can put it up again that would be great - and thanks.

Incidentally I thought ithe Govt website was very ambiguous but having read our tenancy agreement that seems to be much clearer and we appear to have the landlord over a barrel.

We are reducing the rent until she hopefully comes to her senses. Warm Regards

Well mental case isn't that the problem. Is it a HK thing that there is so much money about and maybe people are so blase and maybe arrogant about it that they don"t care.

This woman is whining that no-one told her about it before she bought the place. Well (some)buyers dont do they. That's why a rational person would get a report. She only had to make an appointment with us and she could have seen the soaking towels on the floor to stop the leaks. She then coudld have said "OOh whats that" and we could have said "A leak my dear". That could have helped her make an informed decision on the property eh? Now when she gets a quote for 28 grand she says Not my responsibility! And refuses to deal with us.

Never mind,we've voluntarily reduced our rent for next week. And we wont be dealing with her either. Wonder what we'll do with the extra cash. Bali's nice this time of year isn't it!
