how many mls/ounces of expressed milk would i need to give my 1 month old for a full feed? any rough guide or is it purely a matter of trial and error?

It is best to let baby decide how much milk to take. Then you are at less risk for overfeeding which may create obesity problems later in life. If baby is growing, then there is really no need to be feeding extra. It just makes more work and money for you in pumping, cleaning and sterilizing bottles, purchasing pumps etc.
If you are worried about supply, look at output in the diapers and if the weight gain isn't sufficient, then try to increase your own milk. kellymom.com has some very good protocols to follow and tons of research to back them up. Even something as simple as YOU drinking more water and nursing one side, then the other side, then the first side again and using breast compression can increase your own milk supply in just a few days. And making sure your baby is latched on properly.
Consider going to a La Leche League meeting and talk to the Leaders and mothers there and borrow the books in their library.
Good luck and keep up the caring mothering!
cheers from Ruth

There's a rough formula you can use to work it out - here's the link (great website too, with loads of info on breastfeeding):
