potty training for 15 month old?

okok, so most books say successful potty training is not really possible until 18 months onwards.

i agree to some extent as i can't imagine my son staying dry all day and night so soon.

but in the poop department, he seems ready though. for the past month, he would grab at his nappy and come to us, to "tell" us that he has done a poop. but the past week or so, he will start grabbing it, we see there's no poop yet but 10 mins or so later, he's done one. we have tried to put him on the potty today when he did the same thing but he thought the potty was more of a toy...so we took him back to his room and a few minutes later, he pooped in his nappy.

so my question is, how do you encourage your child to get used to pooping on a potty or a a child toilet seat....and did you manage this around 15 months or was this much much later?

joshmomm, thanks for your post!

yes, i don't want him to be turned off and scared by the whole potty training thing.

you know, we actually started off with EC - this was before 7 months and i think being on formula made it harder for him to go so everyday after every milk feed (or if he appeared to be struggling with the feed), i would hold him like he was over a potty and make poopy noises. that's essentially how he went....he would never poo say if we were out and about and he was in a pram.

but that all changed once he was in solids, we couldn't stop the poop! he goes about 2-3 times a day. the morning one is pretty regular but the other ones, hard to predict so we gave up with the EC.

wheelymate, congrats on your second pregnancy.

well, my son used to poo immediately on waking and the second/third time would be later on during the day. I got him a potty when he was 18 months old (just before I was due for #2) but he thought it was just another toy. I gave up pretty soon and then started again only after he was able to tell me after he had done the job. That was at 21 months. Got him a new potty and voila! he was trained in just 3 days (both poo and wee) but the honeymoon lasted only 4 weeks. He regressed (I think it was because of us moving back from my parents' home to HKG) and I was at my wits' end. Then, at 27 months, (with a lot of help from the helper), he went back to being potty trained AGAIN (not in the nights, though) and has remained so, for the past 3 months.
