By 1 my kids were eating mashed meals of whatever we were eating. I don't think by 13months there is anything they can't eat, so really the skies the limit. Most kids love pasta, you could try that with either bolognese, tomato or tuna sauce. Peas and sweetcorn are good too, and are great for their fine motor control (picking them up off the plate). Kids love to finger feed at that age so anything thats easy to pick up.

stb,

happy birthday to your little one!

fel, i echo stb's questions...unless your child has many food allergies and completely not used to textures, after 1, they can eat outside foods no problems. of course, there will be some seasoning but if eaten in moderation and the dish is fairly healthy, i don't see why not!

for example when we were staying in a hotel recently, i did bring some jars (only because kids menu is not cheap) but he has some pasta with tomato sauce from the hotel and he ate his breakfast (fruit, yoghurt, breads, cereals) from the buffet. and when we take him out for meals now, he has our bread, our soup or sometimes he'll get something like fish and chips but i try to remove the fish batter if too greasy.

after 1 (and honestly even before that), your child's diet doesn't have to be restricted to rice and noodles! your child can also eat what you and hubby does...after 1, they don't even need porridge, normal rice is fine. say you cook a stir-fry or you make a soup (say a chicken soup with some veggies), just mix it up with some rice but maybe more of the gravy/soup.

good luck!

thanks for your post!

i do cook separately for her now, cos i worried about the seasoning she be getting if she were to share the same food as us. I read that it is better to introduce outside food etc after they r 18mth old. so now, is like interim period whereby baby food is too boring for her and our food might hv too much seasoning for her.

anyway, i will slowly introduce more of our home cooked food to her.

thanks

for my kids - if I am worried about the level of seasoning in the food -

I don't season until the very end, and I take out a portion of the unseasoned food for my girls and then my husband and I have the seasoned stuff.

My intention is not to take over this thread with advertising but you might be interested in knowing that I am teaching a course on healthy cooking for toddlers at the YWCA (English members department) on Thursday June 21st. I will demonstrate some healthy recipes from different regions using fresh ingredients. The lack of time factor is usually the dilemma for mums, the recipes are quick and can be enjoyed by all the family. Toddlers tend to be picky; hence we will discuss tips and tricks for picky eaters. All recipes for both the courses will be based on the main nutritional elements that constitute good health.

I am a mother of two and a passionate cook and believe that good dietary habits start from when solids are started.

Have a look at this website or if you have any questions you can send me a PM.
