Baby school recommendations

ORIGINAL POST

I am looking to enroll my 4.5month old baby boy into a play school. Main objective is to expose him to interaction with other kids. I only know of KinderU. But would appreciate more recommendations.

Thanks

Cara is right, --babies tend to parallel play when they're younger and do not really start interacting with other kids until much later.

If you really want to, though, you might want to try Baby Signs classes --Gymboree offers the Sign, Say & Play classes; or you can also try http://www.babysignshongkong.com This way you learn something that YOU can do with your child at home.

Agree with Cara and Kwis. Babies run around in their own totally autonomous universe until 2 or beyond. They can observe and notice, but playing together with other babies doesn't really happen, nor does it stimulate any additional development. It is great for YOU if you feel you need a need for some human contact outside of your infant, and a happier mom makes a better mom.

Highly second baby signs - did it with both of my kids and there is sound research that it actually DOES help develop good speech, better vocabulary, earlier communication with parents. I just notice that it made my baby far less frustrated when she could tell me what she wanted even though she couldn't SAY.

Another good book to find ways to interact with your child is Baby Minds by Acredolo and Goodwyn (creators and researchers of baby signs.)

for true "interactive" play between toddlers - they have to be able to communicate - for most this is around 2 years old. Cara - your baby must be an early bloomer!

ok, i agree with the above that a 4.5 month old doesn't need classes to other kids.

BUT...germaine, it's still not the bad idea to take your kid as a excuse to get out of the house and make friends with other mums. my friends who attended baby classes all agreed...at this stage, the class was more for the mums than the bubs! so go sign up for now, have abit of fun but don't expect your child to be the most sociable person in the world after attending it. :)

What about something like a mother and baby swim class? Gets you both out of the house, you get to meet other new mums and he gets familiar with the water.

Btw... we go to Letter-land run by Alison and her husband, Sven. It's fantastic and economical unlike a lot of other baby schools in HK. The have a baby programme and a toddler programme. Otherwise, find out where your nearest Just Juniors centre is. Our bub attends their Music Together session and loves it.

Why not try a mother and toddler group, pretty cheap, usually around $60, no booking required just pay as you go. The baby has different toys to play with, you get to meet and chat with new people over a cup of coffee. Theres a lot around, personally I used to go to the one at the USRC in Jordan.

Spockey, Harry Wright runs swim classes for all ages in various clubs and schools in HK. The website is www.hwiswim.com. Not sure what the summer programme is like for the baby groups, but I think ours is running through. Well worth giving them a call.

i agree with Spockey - Baby Buddies (Tiny Tots) run by Alison from Letterland is excellent. Very reasonable and the babies all tend to love it. My son goes there once a week and he has a great 'teacher' but there is a lot of play and interaction too. There's songs, storytime, free play, music, all rolled intogether. i think they let you go for a free trial.
