Another question on work permit

I am here on a normal entry visa but would like to work.


Can my prospective employer apply for a work permit for me stating I am here on an entry visa thus requesting a change of status visa or must I go back home and wait for a work permit to be granted and then come back to HK?


I would prefer to stay in HK and explore the place while waiting for the Employer to submit the application and the granting of a work permit.

You can make your application FROM HK although Immigration will indicate they are not very happy that you wish to change your status. You can remain in HK as long as your conditions of stay are not breached. In other words DO NOT WORK until you are granted the appropriate work permit. At such time as the visa has been granted, a visa label will be generated for attachments into your passport. You MUST exit HK and enter on the said permit which will change your status from a former visitor to a resident.



Do not assume that the HK Immigration authorities, "owe anyone" a work authorization...in other words it is not automatic by any stretch that you WILL be receiving a work permit. If you are offered employment ensure that the application for YOUR future work authorization is NOT handled by an inexperienced clerk in your employer's company you can at bets face unnecessary delay and at worst receive a rejection.
