Advice needed, moving to HK

ORIGINAL POST

We are moving from Australia to HK to work in about 2 months time. Is there ANYTHING anyone would reccommend we bring with us that you can't easily get in HK? I know this probably sounds plain silly, but thought it was worth asking!??

Thanks!

Hong Kong is quite a civilized city. You can pretty much get anything in here. I would say probably your own medicines are really the only thing you should be aware of. Good luck

You even have that Aus homeware shop now that everyone loves so much (I can't think of the name though). Wine is a little more expensive but thats about it.

if you bring wine, don't call it wine on your packing list!

kids socks aren't that easy to buy here.

it depends on your family what might be hard to get, but you can always thow money at an issue, and lots of web sites from o/s deliver to HK. (Amazon for books etc)

I have a few strange ones that i also bring back with me. Picnic bars, Keens Mustard the powdered one. Custard powder. If you have kids then things for lunch boxes ie vegemite dippers etc. or and dont forget the cherry ripes.

Kids panadol and other medicines.

If you are into fake tanning then bring your supply with you.

You can get nearly everything here.

Good luck

Violet crumbles and Barley sugar and chomps - any sweets you will be craving when feeling a little homesick. Also urinary alkalisers areb't sold here and any medication that you love so that when you are poorly the first time you don't need to go off to the pharmacy. Reasonably priced but good quality sheets sets are a bit hard to find here, so if you were planning on a spruce up in the bedrooms perhaps do that in Australia in the winter sales as they tend to have very high end and then low but the middle is sort of missing. Teenage boy clothes, large shoes for women, above a 40 and also big bras and swimsuits. You will see lots of posts for that sort of thing and they are available here somewhere or on the net but not at a mall like in a big Westfield. Blond hair dye products if you do it at home, hairdressers have it but hard to find in shops and also spray in conditioner if you use that. Nothing you can't live without and lots of a lovely new products to try from all around the world.

Spray in conditioner is available at hairdressers to buy, kids panadol is available virtually everywhere. Agree with big bras and swimsuits. And large shoes. M&S always sell out of size 7's as soon as they come in. Spotlight has just opened here which seemed to have quite a good selection of bedding. Quiksilver, neil Pryde, sports wear is readily available for teenage boys. Trendy Jeans maybe not quite so easy for them.

If you have a certain hair dye, you might want to check into it. If it's the kind that washes, out, you may have difficulty finding it.

Not silly at all...tho the things I bring may be! Gravox, Kraft grated parmasen cheese (you can get it here but it's not the same), Necafe Gold coffee (can again get it here but again, not the same), Tim tams (definitely not the same), chocolates, cottees cordial, I'm sure there others but can't think of them now.

It really depends on the individual. I'm sure you'll find other things that you miss but you'll get by! If you have kids you might want to get Neurofen drops!

tampons if you're picky (you get like 3 brands here with very limited options)

nappies for night time - I've tried them all and they all leak

Definitely tampons, semi-permanent hair dye, ural, garnier fake tan, swimsuit (unless you want to see your swimsuit being warn by 20 others), decent school socks for your kids, as much wine as you dare. We decided to buy a new mattress here in Hong Kong. Big mistake,

Good luck with the move

Thought of another thing. On the off chance that you are currently breast feeding I would stock up on nursing pads. While they are available here, it is generally only at the baby/kids stores and selected Watsons or Manning, not in the supermarkets at home. And the barnd choice is a bit limited.

Just a thought as I've been caught without them at times and it has been a frustrating ordeal to get some!
