1. Gripe water - My 7 weeks old baby gets colicky in the evening and my mum insists on giving her the gripewater. She says she has given that to both me and my brother everyday when we were babies. I am not so convinced about it but it does seem to help my baby. Would really appreciate feedback on this.

2. Night time bath - Is it too early to give a bath to my 7 weeks old before she sleeps in the night. Have been told by a lot of people that should wait for 3 months.

thanks a lot..

Gripe Water- my mom told me the same thing too. I asked my two ped's and they both said, that's the OLD method for raising babies, they don't believe in it. A friend who's a nurse advised me to just use it for teething pains and gum pains when my babies were crying b/c of teething.

Colicky is really just a term for us to use when we CANNOT explain what's bothering the baby... or why he/she is crying endlessly.

I just used cotton pads, dabbed some gripe water and rubbed his gums, I never let my kids on drinking any of it.

Night time bath- I think the reason people say to wait, is b/c night time.. it's cooler, easy to catch a cold, so it's better to take the bath in the afternoon. (I think.) So if you can make sure the bathroom isn't cold, then I don't see any reason why baby can't take a bath at night.

Jusy My thoughts.

Night Bath - we have been giving a nightly bath since we came home from hospital. It is a very relaxing thing for the baby and a great transition from day to night.

Also, we found when very young (under 6 months) a bit warmer than the suggested 37 degrees works really well - it is called a deep heat relaxing bath or something like that, total magic!

We only use soap about once a week.

In winter we use a heater in the bathroom to be sure the room is nice and warm.

cara, can u please let me know what are the drops that your doctor prescribed. My 4.5month is also slightly lactose intolerant. he lacks the lactase (the enzymes) which are needed to breakdown lactose.

hi there,

so many various remedies for colicky babies...gripe water, rid wind drops, etc....i don't see any harm trying gripe water.

and it's the first time i'm hearing that you can't bath a child in the evening until 3 months! i think it's a very lovely part of the bedtime routine to have a nice warm bath...soothes the baby and helps to bring out the day to night transition.

Some gripewater products contain alcohol and/or sodium bicarbonate which are not recommended for babies and young children. Check the product and consult with your pediatrician if they advise using it.

A night time bath is a great way to settle your baby starting from a newborn. It is also a good start to establishing a bedtime routine.

I used it on my daughter (now 6) she wasn't a very colicky baby but, it worked to settle her tummy better than anything else. The one we used (from UK) did not contain alcohol though. Not sure about other products on the market. I also bathed her from very early on - just a few weeks old and just for a few minutes - she loved it! good luck.

If you are breastfeeding, you can drink some fennel seed tea. The carminative effect passes through into the breastmilk and helps with colic. It also increases your milk supply.

I used gripe water for all mine, back then it had alcohol in it and worked wonders, it doesn't any more. Still worth a try. And why would you wait till 3months to bath your baby, we bathed from the word go, often in the big bath with dad. The babies loved being in their snuggled up to dad, and it wasa good bonding time for them.
