Hi moms and Dads,
I am in the midst of starting up a music studio for piano, theory and aural teaching... however, because I don't teach outside of my home studio everyday.... I am sharing rent with a partner.
We are having problems settling on the "environment" of the studio.
It's not going to be ground level studio/store. We are looking at commercial buildings, with nice lobby, elevator, and offices and tutor centers in the building.
Looking at Prince Edward area, and Causeway Bay area.
The question is: would you feel your child is getting good music education from a location such as a 300 sq feet office, with a grand piano, and a small table for teaching theory. The buildings are usually quite old too, and would you see me, as the teacher as more "professional" than teaching from home?
If your child is about 10 years old to 17 years old, would you feel it's safe for your child to come to the lesson by himself/herself?
Do you prefer taking lessons at the teacher's home studio? Am I wasting my time trying to find a place like this? I don't plan to invest much into the decor, just the piano, and clean office.
I have to commit to the rent for 2 years. I don't want to make any wrong judgement calls.
Thanks for any opinion.

Personally, as long as the teacher is good, what you described is fine. Of course this is assuming that there are not too many students at one time and the place is well ventilated.
My daughter currently takes piano lesson with a teacher in North Point. Her entire apt. is about 500 sq. ft. So where the piano is, which is the living room is very small to say the least. But it never bothered my daughter and I really like the teacher.
On the other hand, a choir she was a member of used this place in Central that is actually a nicely equiped studio. It is about 500 to 600 sq. ft. There were 18 kids in a room that is around 300 sq. ft. There was no air. THe place was carpeted which is worse. Parents really complained talking about taking the kids out of the choir. Eventually they moved to a different location.
To cut it short, many factors come in play. But sounds ok.

Thanks so much for your opinions.
Thanks for pointing out the "fire hazards", and also that the "teacher" is the main factor.
I wish I can just teach from my home, but b/c I live in Clearwater Bay, it's hard to ask my Kowloon and HK island students to come in for lessons... especially when most of them have SO many other activities going on, and the parents are so busy....
Will definitely look into choosing somewhere "safe" and "convenient".
I would love to hear more opinions. Thanks.
