Angkor Wat

Anyone been to Angkor Wat?Got 6days off the end of this month.Any info..where to stay and what else to do after visit the site? Thank U.

Not much to do in Siem Reap other than see the temples - theres a street that backpackers hang out but its not very inspiring... so suggest you choose a nice place to say heheh... Raffles property is also nice

We were there this past weekend - fantastic place. Stayed at the FCC Angkor, which was a mixed experience. On the plus side, it is small, intimate and has a beautiful pool for relaxing between temple sessions (so you don't become 'templed out' too quickly). The massages included in our package were fantastic and the hotel was not too expensive. On the downside, the rooms were a bit small and the hotel bar played Western music at full blast in the evenings. When we were trying to eat meals on the lovely terrace, this was a major negative, but we were told that the FCC is run by an Englishman who thinks loud music is the way to attract customers. However, this was not our reason for visiting Cambodia.


If we went again, we would probably stay at the Raffles, but would also consider the Hotel de la Paix and Sofitel.


Through our hotel, we arranged airport transfers, tuk-tuks and, for longer journeys, a car. The hotel also arranged an English-speaking tour guide for us, who was great. Without him, we wouldn't have had a clue what we were looking at.


The Angkor temple complex is more than just Angkor Wat. We also liked other temples like Ta Prohm, Bayon and Banteay Srey (about 40km from Angkor Wat, a very interesting drive through countryside and local villages). You could also visit the old market or night market if you like shopping. Other options include Tonle Sap (and the floating village) and the Landmine Museum (on the way back from Banteay Srey).


We flew with Siem Reap Airways International - not bad at all. Siem Reap Airport is also very nice and new. Finally, you might want to consider the e-visa option, it took us 20-30 minutes to apply online and we received our visas within a day.

Finally, take US dollars, including a good supply of 1-dollar notes for the children selling things at the temples.

I am going to Siem Reap over the Xmas holidays.

Some people have said waking up for sunrise is a good idea and wathcing sunset. Also hiring a bike to travel around. Any comments?
