Roof garden

ORIGINAL POST

I have an empty rooftop belonging to my Happy Valley apartment with an area about 8m by 6m (27ft by 20ft) that I'd like to make really nice and somewhere I want to spend time. I'd like enough attractive plants to make it feel less bare, but preferably some that don't require intensive looking after to make them work.

(1) can anyone suggest reasonably-priced companies to supply plants (and expertise on what works/doesn't work), wooden furniture, etc?

(2) I've taken a look at some of the prices for outdoor furniture in Horizon Plaza and was shocked: I'm certain there must be less expensive alternatives! Any ideas?

(3) From your own experience, what sorts of plants and greenery tend to work well without needing intensive looking-after? Watering a few times a week is fine, but every day may be pushing it for me!

Look forward to your replies.

B&Q has some very reasonably priced out door furniture and I think you will find it much cheaper than what you can find in Horizon Plaza, they have a limited supply of in door/outdoor plants as well again at very good prices.

For plants - my experience is to look at the urban council gardens. THey usually have the same dozen or so varieties - and they actually seem to like HK conditions. I would say, don't chose too many palms if your roof is in the line of strong winds - they will turn brown. Golden leaf, ixora, umbrella plants, ficus all do well in my garden here.

I saw an article in the SCMP last week sometime about people doing creative things with roof gardens. The garden they featured belonged to a member of the Hong Kong Gardening Society (I think that's the right name), so they might be able to give you some advice if you can get contact details.

Excellent - thank you all.

@hkkm: I just found the SCMP article online, very helpful, and i think i'll get in touch with the HKGS

@jem: great idea! will do a little bit of reconnaissance next time I'm out and about. Thanks for the tips!

And if anyone else reading this has further advice or thoughts, I'd be very glad to hear!

Where is B&Q?

B&Q is in the MegaBox Mall, which is near the old Kai Tak airport in Kowloon. (I think Telford Plaza MTR is nearest, or if you are driving, go through the Kai Tak Airport tunnel and you pop up pretty close by).

Our neighbours have a great garden, they made a deal with a garden shop that they bought the plants from... they pay them a monthly fee (300 Maybe) to come every few months to maintain them and will replace what dies.

I think it was called P&F Gardens and is in Pokfulam between the firehouse and cyberport. But other companies must do this too??
