When to give water?

My 6 month old is just starting solids. Otherwise, he's breastfed. I'm wondering when and how much liquid other than breastmilk to give him, and if it's necessary (I don't want constipation issues).

The weather is also very hot now and I notice that he seems thirstier than usual. How much water should I give him? Thanks.

With my 100% breast fed baby, we never really did the water until much later. Although we did have a sippy cup of water, he didn't really like it. You can try, and see if baby wants it or not.

My suggestion is use a sippy cup, regular cup or cup with a straw - not a bottle.

I tried to do water with lunch every day but it took my LO a long time to master drinking water. She got the hang of a straw cup much better than a sippy cup.

I'd say try a little every day but don't get upset if he doesn't take it - your bm will change to meet his needs.

i didn't bf but from what i read, the liquid needs of a baby will be met by bf.

that said, it doesn't hurt to introduce water to your baby. but don't pressure yourself or baby on how much to drink on a daily basis. at this stage, it's just about practice and getting used to a different liquid from milk.

Make sure that YOU are drinking a lot more with the hot weather. Here's what Dr Jack Newman says...

Water

Breastmilk is over 90% water. Babies breastfeeding well do not require extra water, even in summer, even in the hottest weather. If they are not breastfeeding well, they also do not need extra water, but rather, the mother should be helped so that breastfeeding works better.

A breastfed baby does not require water or other liquids if thriving and gaining adequately. Breastmilk is 80 to 90 percent water.

Constipation is unlikely in breastfed babies as well. If the weather is hot, offer short more frequent breastfeeds to satisfy thirst.
